As of September 2026 reporting, the season had not aired, and Disney had not announced that it would. The cancellation is distinct from legal decisions about the 2023 case and later allegations.
Why did ABC cancel Taylor Frankie Paul’s season?
TMZ released video from a 2023 altercation between Paul and Mortensen on March 19, 2026. The Associated Press described footage in which Paul appeared to punch and kick Mortensen and throw chairs while their young daughter watched and cried. Those are descriptions of the reported video, not a summary of a court finding about the footage.

Disney Entertainment Television said the video prompted the decision. A spokesperson stated: “In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of ‘The Bachelorette’ at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family.” The network did not describe the season as permanently destroyed or say that it would never air. What was the season’s status after cancellation?
The season had been filmed and was scheduled to premiere March 22, 2026. ABC pulled it on March 19, three days before that date. In September, The Daily Beast reported that Paul disclosed an engagement in a preview for an upcoming Secret Lives of Mormon Wives episode, but Disney had not announced that The Bachelorette season would air. Its eventual disposition therefore remained unconfirmed in the reporting available at that time. The Daily Beast

How are the 2023 case and later allegations different?
The 2023 criminal case preceded Paul’s casting on the show. Reports about the 2026 cancellation also described a separate, then-open investigation involving later allegations. The cases have different timelines and outcomes; one should not be treated as a ruling on the other.
| Proceeding | What reporting says | Reported status |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 incident and criminal case | Paul was arrested and charged after an altercation with Mortensen. ABC News reported that in August 2023 she entered a plea in abeyance to one felony aggravated-assault count. The agreement allowed the count to be reduced to a misdemeanor after three years if its terms were met; other charges were dismissed. | The Associated Press reported that the three-year probation period ended in August 2026. The plea concerned the 2023 case, not later allegations. ABC News; Associated Press |
| Later reported fights and allegations | At the time of ABC’s cancellation, Draper City police were reported to have an open domestic-assault investigation involving Paul and Mortensen, with allegations made in both directions. | In April 2026, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office declined to file charges against Paul over more recent fights it reviewed. AP reported the DA’s memo said some submitted incidents did not rise to criminal offenses, remaining incidents lacked sufficient evidence, and some older incidents were outside the applicable review period. This decision did not resolve the separate 2023 case or protective-order proceedings. Associated Press |
Police told ABC News that they did not have additional public information about the Draper investigation, adding: “Without an immediate impact to public safety, it is the practice of the department not to release details related to active investigations.” ABC News also reported police said the 2023 incident had not occurred in Draper. What did Paul and Mortensen say?
Paul’s spokesperson told the AP that Paul was grateful for ABC’s support as she prioritized her family’s safety and security. The spokesperson also alleged that Paul had suffered abuse and said she was seeking support; these were the spokesperson’s claims, not findings by investigators or a court.
Mortensen told the AP the video was “a deeply upsetting situation,” denied the claims against him as “baseless,” and said he was focusing on his son’s safety. His remarks are a denial, not an independent determination of what happened. Associated Press

Why was Paul cast, and what else changed?
Paul was known from Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and the MomTok community. ABC announced her casting in September 2025. Her selection differed from the franchise’s usual route of choosing a lead from a prior Bachelor season. AP also noted Hulu and ABC’s corporate connection. During the March 2026 controversy, filming of Mormon Wives season five was paused, according to AP; that was related production context, not the reason ABC gave for canceling The Bachelorette.
