Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s relationship moved from political distance to a conspicuous alliance in 2024, then broke into a public feud in June 2025. They later met and spoke briefly, but that contact did not establish a full reconciliation. Here is the timeline, based on reported events through December 2025.
Before 2024: a changeable relationship
Trump and Musk’s earlier relationship was not a continuous friendship. Retrospective coverage describes a shifting mix of distance and contact, rather than a steady alliance. By March 2024, Musk was moving closer to Trump and Republican political activity, according to CBS News. The public turning point came later that year.
How Trump and Musk became political allies
July 2024: Musk endorses Trump
After Trump was shot at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, Musk publicly endorsed him. The endorsement made their alignment visible and politically consequential. The Washington Post’s account records the announcement.
August 2024: a campaign conversation on X
On August 12, Musk hosted Trump for a live conversation on X. Technical delays drew attention before the discussion got underway; much of it followed familiar campaign themes. Musk also proposed a government-efficiency commission and floated a role for himself in such an effort, according to Axios and CBS News.

Fall 2024: Musk campaigns and spends
Musk appeared at Trump rallies, including events in Pennsylvania. NPR reported that Musk spent nearly $300 million backing Trump and other Republicans in the 2024 election. That figure is an aggregate for support to Trump and other Republican candidates and causes—not a Trump-only contribution. NPR’s account describes the spending.
From campaign alliance to a White House role
November 2024 to January 2025: Musk joins the cost-cutting effort
After Trump won, he praised Musk and brought him into the administration’s government-cost-cutting effort. Musk became its most visible public figure. The name DOGE could suggest a conventional cabinet department, but NPR noted that it was not an official department established by Congress. NPR and CBS News trace the transition from campaigning to government work.

February 2025: Musk makes the closeness explicit
In February, Musk posted on X: “I love @realDonaldTrump as much as a straight man can love another man.” The line was Musk’s own public expression of support, reproduced by CBS News; “bromance” is shorthand for this visible closeness, not evidence about either man’s private feelings.
March 11, 2025: Trump appears with Tesla vehicles
Trump appeared with Musk and Tesla vehicles at the White House on March 11. The event publicly connected presidential support with Musk’s company while Tesla was under scrutiny. The appearance documents proximity; it does not by itself establish a commercial effect. CBS News covered the event.

Musk’s period as a special government employee ended in May. At an Oval Office send-off on May 30, Trump praised his work: “Today it’s about a man named Elon. And he’s one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced. He stepped forward to put his very great talents into the service of our nation and we appreciate it. Just want to say that Elon has worked tirelessly helping lead the most sweeping and consequential government reform program in generations.” The remarks, transcribed by The Associated Press, were an affectionate public send-off, even as Musk’s formal role concluded.
June 2025: a policy dispute becomes a public feud
The rupture followed Musk’s criticism of Trump’s major spending and tax legislation. The disagreement escalated into attacks on X and Truth Social. Trump raised possible consequences for Musk’s companies and government contracts or subsidies; Musk responded with counterattacks, including an Epstein-related allegation that NPR characterized as unsupported. Those were claims made during the dispute, not established findings. The Washington Post’s timeline tracks the exchanges, while NPR reports on the fallout.
The fight also had a visible market-day consequence for Tesla: The Washington Post reported that the company’s shares fell 14 percent at the close on June 5, 2025. That is a reported change in Tesla’s share price on that date, not a measure of the personal relationship. The Washington Post’s coverage gives the figure.

Trump and Musk shook hands and spoke briefly at Charlie Kirk’s memorial in Glendale, Arizona, on September 21. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One afterward, Trump said, “Elon came over and said hello,” and added, “We had a little conversation.” He described their relationship as having been very good. The exchange confirms contact and a less hostile public moment, but not a restoration of their earlier alliance. Axios reported on the meeting; the American Presidency Project transcript records Trump’s remarks.

December 2025: signs of a thaw
On December 16, Axios reported that Musk was backing Republican campaigns for the 2026 midterms, that he and Trump spoke occasionally, and that their relationship had thawed. Representatives declined to comment. This is evidence of renewed political activity and some contact, not confirmation that the June dispute was fully resolved. Axios’s report is the latest relationship update established here; it does not verify what happened afterward.
