Sunderland Echo galleries identify several well-known people as Sunderland supporters, including former England footballer Jill Scott, athlete Steve Cram and ex-chairman Niall Quinn. But the available reports do not establish that any of the people below attended a Sunderland match during the 2023/24 season. They are best read as recognizable figures with reported links to the club—not as confirmed sightings at a particular game.
Seven recognizable names linked to Sunderland AFC
The Sunderland Echo published supporter galleries in November 2024 and June 2025, after the 2023/24 season. Those profiles report supporter connections and club histories; they do not document attendance at 2023/24 fixtures.
-
Jill Scott
The former England international and I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! winner attended Sunderland matches with her grandfather as a child, according to the Echo’s November 2024 gallery. That family memory is the clearest personal supporter detail among the names on this list. Sunderland Echo profile.
-
Steve Cram
The Jarrow-born former middle-distance runner is described as an avid Sunderland fan. The Echo’s June 2025 gallery also notes his support for the club’s Foundation of Light charity. This is a local sporting connection, but the profile was published well after 2023/24. Sunderland Echo profile.

Niall Quinn
Quinn is both a well-known former Ireland international and a major figure in Sunderland’s own history. The Echo’s 2024 gallery recounts his time at the club as a player, coach, manager and chairman. His Sunderland connection is therefore more than celebrity fandom: it includes several senior football roles. Sunderland Echo profile.
-
Martin O’Neill
The former Sunderland manager is described as a boyhood supporter. Recalling how that began, O’Neill said: “I was growing up as a kid, don’t know where it came from probably because Charlie Hurley played for them, I was a big Sunderland fanatic.” The account appears in the Echo’s 2025 gallery, not in a report of a match during 2023/24. Jordan Henderson
The Sunderland-born former Liverpool captain is also an academy product of Sunderland. The Echo’s 2024 gallery records him among Sunderland supporters at the 2014 League Cup final. That is a specific historic sighting, but it is not evidence that he attended a 2023/24 fixture. Sunderland Echo profile.
-
Alyson Dixon
The Sunderland-born marathon runner represented England and Great Britain. The Echo’s 2024 gallery includes her among Sunderland-connected public figures; it does not provide a more detailed supporter anecdote, so her link is best described in those terms rather than embellished. Lee Howey
Howey is a former Sunderland player, identified in the Echo’s 2024 gallery. That makes him a recognizable face with a direct club connection, but the profile supports describing him as a former player—not making a separate claim about his celebrity status or matchday attendance. What “you may see at a game” can—and cannot—mean
These profiles answer the broad question of which public figures have a reported connection to Sunderland. They do not establish who was in the crowd at any particular 2023/24 match. Of the names above, the cited gallery supplies a specific sighting only for Henderson, at the 2014 League Cup final. A past appearance cannot be used to predict or confirm a later one.

A worldwide supporter community
Celebrity profiles are only one small part of Sunderland’s following. For its 2024 International Fans Day, the club’s Branch Liaison Council described a network of over 50 UK-based branches and 35 overseas groups; the page does not specify a separate statistical reference date for those counts. The event was scheduled for the 6 April 2024 home match against Bristol City. Chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said: “Overseas supporters are important members of the Sunderland AFC community and International Fans Day 2024 represents an excellent opportunity to celebrate the incredible following we have around the world. It would be fantastic to see supporters from across the globe travel to the Stadium of Light in April and I’m sure fans, players and staff alike will ensure they all enjoy a weekend to remember.” Sunderland AFC: International Fans Day 2024.
