Hotel Cocaine is an eight-episode scripted crime thriller about the Mutiny Hotel and Miami’s late-1970s and early-1980s cocaine scene—not a documentary. It draws on the real hotel and the experiences of Roman Compte, but its story is fictionalized. Here are seven key details, including who stars in it and how to check where it is available to stream.
1. It’s a scripted crime thriller, not a documentary
Hotel Cocaine is an eight-episode drama created and showrun by Chris Brancato. Although the series draws on real people and places, it is scripted entertainment rather than a documentary or episode-by-episode historical account. Stan’s series announcement describes it as a crime thriller.
2. Danny Pino plays Roman Compte
Danny Pino stars as Roman Compte, a Cuban exile who manages Miami’s Mutiny Hotel. The character’s position places him at the intersection of the hotel’s nightlife and the criminal world around it.
3. The Mutiny Hotel is the story’s real-world anchor
The series is set in Miami’s late-1970s and early-1980s cocaine scene, with the Mutiny presented as a glamorous gathering place for figures from business, entertainment, politics, and crime. That is the show’s premise, not a complete or quantified record of the hotel’s guests. In a 2024 Associated Press report, the Mutiny was described as a 138-room hotel whose nightclub no longer existed. The report does not establish the hotel’s current operating status or whether it is open to visitors.

4. The story has a real-person connection, but it is fictionalized
Roman Compte was a real man. The AP reported that his son, Maurice, shared his father’s experiences with Brancato, who then began fictionalizing them. The best description is that the series is inspired by the real Mutiny Hotel and Compte’s experiences—not that its individual plotlines are all historically verified.
5. The cast and creative team extend beyond the lead
Alongside Pino, the cast includes Yul Vazquez, Michael Chiklis, Mark Feuerstein, Tania Watson, Corina Bradley, and Laura Gordon. Guillermo Navarro directed the pilot and executive produced the series. Stan’s official series page lists the cast and production details.

6. Its creators frame the nightlife against darker stakes
Brancato described the series to the AP as “Casablanca on cocaine.” Pino said that the hedonism and dancing may seem frivolous while a life-and-death struggle unfolds underneath. Brancato also spoke about the human cost he intended the show to evoke; his comment about deaths behind cocaine was a statement of the series’ message, not a measured statistic.
