Those are reactions to the spinoff’s choices, not proof that every fan dislikes it—or that the show is broadly failing.
Why do some Yellowstone fans dislike Marshals?
The main divide is about what kind of show viewers expected. Yellowstone built its story around the Dutton family, the ranch and conflicts that unfolded across a season. Marshals follows Kayce Dutton as he joins a U.S. Marshals unit, bringing him into investigations and missions. The Los Angeles Times describes the series as blending Yellowstone’s Western flavor with the procedural crime genre.
That shift gives viewers a clear reason to feel the new series is not the continuation they wanted, even if it retains familiar characters and the franchise’s Western setting. Here are five recurring objections reflected in interviews, reviews and individual fan comments—not a poll of all Yellowstone viewers.
1. It shifts from ranch drama to a crime procedural
For viewers drawn to the Duttons’ long-running family and land conflicts, the move from ranch drama to law-enforcement cases can feel like a change of genre. In Marshals, Kayce’s work with a U.S. Marshals unit puts missions and investigations in the foreground. The Los Angeles Times frames that blend as Western-inflected procedural crime, while premiere reactions collected by TechRadar and Esquire include viewers calling it a predictable police procedural.

That response is about format: episodic cases may not offer the same kind of continuous family-and-ranch conflict that those viewers valued in the original.
2. The ranch and original ensemble are no longer the center
Some viewers wanted another story built around the Duttons and the ranch. Familiar Yellowstone characters remain part of the picture, but the new marshal team and Kayce’s job drive the series instead. Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce, acknowledged that this was a deliberate break from simply repeating the original formula: “The dumbest thing we could have done is try to make ‘Yellowstone 2,’ because the main character is gone, which was the ranch.” He also said he hoped fans would accept the show being different. For fans who regarded the ranch and its ensemble as the heart of Yellowstone, that change can make the spinoff feel distant from what they came to watch, even with Kayce still in the lead.
3. The cases can feel predictable or low-stakes
Viewers who prefer sprawling season-long conflicts may find discrete investigations less gripping. In reactions reported by Esquire, some described the challenges as feeling like “barely an inconvenience”; premiere coverage also records the phrase “predictable police procedural.” These are audience impressions, not an objective verdict on the writing or a view shared by all viewers.

The official episode descriptions show the case-oriented structure: CBS lists twelve episodes for season one, with individual law-enforcement plots. That format helps explain why some viewers find the stakes less compelling than the original’s ongoing family and ranch conflicts. (CBS)
4. Kayce’s story begins with a major family loss
The premiere establishes that Kayce’s wife, Monica, has died. For viewers invested in their relationship and family story, starting the spinoff after that loss is a significant reset rather than a simple continuation. Grimes recognized that some fans would object: “I think fans will be upset — and they should be.” The show’s creative team, by contrast, presents Kayce’s grief as central to his new path. That choice may be compelling for viewers interested in a character navigating grief, single parenthood and a new job. Others may feel it sidelines the family life and relationships they wanted the follow-up to preserve.

Some commenters say Marshals resembles other CBS crime dramas and criticize its dialogue as bland or inauthentic. TechRadar’s roundup of premiere reactions likewise collects dismissive responses, including “nothing about this screams Yellowstone.” On Reddit, some viewers have asked whether they would watch the show if Kayce Dutton or the Yellowstone name were not attached. The available reporting establishes that some viewers perceive a familiar network-crime tone; it does not establish that a particular production constraint caused that style.
What the complaints do—and do not—show
These objections point to a mismatch between the elements some fans associate with Yellowstone and the choices Marshals makes: a procedural structure, a different central ensemble, changed family circumstances and a tone some find familiar from other crime dramas. They do not show that all fans dislike the spinoff or quantify how many do. Individual comments and reaction roundups can illustrate recurring complaints, but they are not representative polling.
Nor does visible dislike mean viewers have stopped watching. CBS’s official listing displays an ongoing season presence, including a season-two premiere listing for October 4, 2026. That listing establishes the show’s scheduled return, not audience approval. CBS describes Kayce as working as a U.S. Marshal while trying to build a stable home life; showrunner Spencer Hudnut has said the series carries forward themes including “the cost and consequences of violence” and “man versus nature, man versus man.” (CBS; Los Angeles Times)
