This ranked list favors films with a clear target, distinctive comic craft, and enough character or narrative to work beyond a string of references. The order is an editorial judgment, not a measurable consensus; no authoritative ranking establishes the 30 greatest parody films.
What are the best parody movies of all time?
Parody has no single boundary. Here, a film qualifies when it substantially imitates and transforms recognizable screen conventions. Some picks are direct genre spoofs; others blend parody with satire, homage, or mockumentary. Familiarity with a target can sharpen the jokes, but a strong story gives newcomers a way in too.

For context, the American Film Institute’s 2005 AFI’s 100 Years…100 Laughs list was a broad comedy ranking selected by a panel of more than 1,500 film-community leaders, not a parody-only canon. It placed Blazing Saddles at #6, Airplane! at #10, Young Frankenstein at #13, and This Is Spinal Tap at #29. AFI announced on June 28, 2026, that it had honorarily reorganized the list, moving Blazing Saddles from #6 to #1; that change concerns its general comedy list, not this ranking. Airplane! (1980)
A disaster-film spoof built from deadpan delivery, visual absurdity, and a rapid succession of verbal gags. It uses the high-stakes setup of an airborne crisis as a platform for jokes that keep undercutting the drama. It is a natural starting point for anyone who wants a tightly constructed, accessible genre parody.

-
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Mel Brooks’s affectionate send-up of classic horror and Universal monster-movie conventions. The film knows the atmosphere and iconography it is playing with, but the comedy comes through character and timing as much as recognition. The British Film Institute describes it as one of Brooks’s particularly artful films in its Mel Brooks essentials.
-
Blazing Saddles (1974)
A Western spoof that turns the genre’s myths about law, heroism, and frontier order into satire about race and power. Its use of racist language and subject matter is central to the film’s provocation, and can be jarring; the context matters, but does not dictate how any individual viewer must respond. AFI’s changing placement for the film belongs to its broad comedy list, not a definitive parody ranking.
-
This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
A mockumentary about a fictional rock band, it parodies both rock-star mythology and the conventions of documentary filmmaking. The camera’s composed, observational manner helps make the invented events feel plausible, while the characters’ self-importance supplies the comedy. The BFI discusses the mockumentary form and includes the film among notable examples in 10 great mockumentary films.
-
The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
A police-procedural spoof whose straight-faced detective, formal investigation, and background sight gags keep colliding with absurdity. Its deadpan approach rewards attention: jokes often arrive in the frame while the dialogue behaves as though nothing unusual is happening.

Spaceballs (1987)
Brooks aims at science-fiction spectacle and, most visibly, the Star Wars universe. The film plays with grand space-opera imagery and franchise storytelling while remaining a broad comic adventure in its own right. BFI’s Brooks overview identifies it as one of his popular later parodies.
-
Top Secret! (1984)
This spy-film and Elvis-musical spoof thrives on absurd reversals of familiar genre expectations. Its comedy is less about a single source than about the way espionage thrillers and old-fashioned musical performance can both be pushed into nonsense.

-
The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)
An anthology that jumps among fake commercials, trailers, television formats, and film genres. Its sketch-based structure is intentionally uneven compared with a single sustained narrative, but that variety is the point: the target is screen entertainment itself, in a range of forms.
-
High Anxiety (1977)
Brooks turns his attention to Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense filmmaking, riffing on the visual language and psychological machinery of thrillers. The jokes land more richly if you recognize the Hitchcock tradition, though the broad comic premise still works without a checklist of references. It is another example of the director’s recurring genre play, noted by the BFI.

Best in Show (2000)
A mockumentary hybrid set around a dog show, it uses the documentary interview and competition formats to expose the eccentricities of its human participants. The event supplies a clear structure; the ensemble’s character comedy makes it more than a spoof of televised contests. BFI’s mockumentary list discusses the film alongside the form’s fake-documentary framing.
-
Hot Shots! (1991)
A military aviation and action-film spoof that sends up the earnest heroics and danger of combat spectacle. It belongs in the same broad comic conversation as Airplane!, but shifts its target toward action and military-film conventions.
-
Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993)
The sequel redirects the joke toward action and war movies, where missions, rescues, and battle scenes provide an abundance of familiar dramatic beats to puncture. It earns its place as its own spoof rather than simply relying on the first film’s premise.
-
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
Brooks sends up medieval adventure and Robin Hood legend, from heroic posturing to the familiar business of disguises, rivalries, and noble missions. It suits viewers who enjoy a deliberately anachronistic approach to period storytelling. BFI’s Brooks retrospective places the film in the director’s long-running engagement with genre conventions.

-
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
This comedy-horror crossover puts the duo up against famous monsters and lets their comic rhythms play against the menace of monster-movie storytelling. Its appeal comes from the contrast: horror imagery promises danger, while the comedians respond with confusion and comic timing.
-
Scary Movie (2000)
A broad horror and teen-slasher spoof that draws on the wave of teen horror films popular around its release. Its references are especially period-specific, and its humor is often explicit, so it is best approached as a snapshot of turn-of-the-century genre comedy as well as a send-up of horror conventions.
-
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
This spy-film spoof takes aim particularly at the suave, gadget-filled world of 1960s James Bond-era adventures. Its retro style and broad sexual humor are inseparable from the joke; some of that humor may feel dated to contemporary viewers.
-
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)
A music-biopic parody that compresses and exaggerates familiar rise, fall, and redemption beats. The film is especially rewarding for viewers who recognize how biopics turn an artist’s life into a sequence of formative losses, career breakthroughs, and final reckonings.

Galaxy Quest (1999)
Both homage and parody, this science-fiction comedy teases television-franchise conventions and the devotion of fans while treating its characters and adventure with genuine affection. It is a good choice for viewers who want the pleasure of space-opera storytelling alongside jokes about its machinery.
-
Tropic Thunder (2008)
A satire of Hollywood war-film production and actors’ self-image, it shifts its target from the battlefield to the people making a supposedly serious war movie. It also contains deliberately provocative material, including a controversial performance choice and jokes about disability; viewers may want to consider that content and its context before watching.

Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
A teen-film convention spoof built around the familiar school cliques, romances, transformations, and rivalries of its era. Its early-2000s reference layer is part of its appeal and its limitation: viewers who know the teen movies it is imitating will catch more of the specific jokes.
-
Duck Soup (1933)
The Marx Brothers’ anarchic political comedy treats authority and national ceremony as ripe for disorder. It is not a modern, one-target genre spoof; it earns a place here as a broad early example of comic subversion that plays with political spectacle and the conventions of power.

The Great Dictator (1940)
Charlie Chaplin’s political satire uses impersonation and parody to confront fascist leadership and the theatricality of political authority. It is broader than a conventional genre spoof, but its comic imitation of a recognizable public figure and political performance fits this list’s wider definition.
-
History of the World, Part I (1981)
An episodic historical parody that moves across different periods and comic targets rather than sustaining one plot or tone. Its sketch-like changes make it a useful pick for viewers who enjoy historical spectacle treated as a succession of comic premises. BFI includes it among Brooks’s genre-playing films in its essential-film overview.
-
Silent Movie (1976)
Brooks makes the form itself the joke: a modern-era film that adopts silent-cinema conventions and turns the absence of spoken dialogue into a comic device. This is format parody more than a send-up of one genre, and it works best for viewers curious about the expressive vocabulary of silent movies.
-
The Producers (1967)
A show-business satire about theatrical ambition and a disastrously cynical production, rather than a straightforward genre spoof. Its inclusion rests on the broader overlap between parody and satire: it mocks the world of making and selling entertainment through an escalating story.

-
Murder by Death (1976)
This mystery-comedy assembles recognizable detective-story types and plays with the conventions of the country-house whodunit. Its older style and dated elements are part of its period context; the central pleasure is watching familiar mystery roles pushed into caricature.
-
The Cheap Detective (1978)
A send-up of hard-boiled detective films and classic noir, it draws on the shadowy world of private eyes, dangerous women, and tangled cases. The more familiar you are with noir’s stock situations, the more readily you will spot the conventions being bent.
-
The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash (1978)
A music-documentary and Beatles-biography spoof presented as a television film, not a theatrical feature. Its fake-history format lets it mimic the solemn retrospective tone of pop-culture documentaries while inventing a band and a mythology to puncture it.
-
A Mighty Wind (2003)
This music mockumentary turns the folk scene and reunion-concert documentary into a setting for affectionate character comedy. Like This Is Spinal Tap, it uses a documentary frame, but its target and musical world are distinct.

The Man with Two Brains (1983)
A comic mixture of science-fiction and melodrama conventions, built around a deliberately absurd premise. It is a more borderline entry than the direct genre spoofs above, but its jokes consistently play on the heightened logic of mad-scientist stories and romantic melodrama.
What movies are like Airplane!?
If you want fast, deadpan absurdity, start with The Naked Gun, which applies a similarly straight-faced comic approach to police-procedural behavior. Top Secret! offers a comparable appetite for visual nonsense but aims at spies and musical conventions. Hot Shots! shifts the broad spoof toward action and aviation films, while The Kentucky Fried Movie gives you the gag density in short, varied sketches rather than one continuous story.
Which movies parody horror movies?
Young Frankenstein is the most affectionate classic-monster-film send-up here, while Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein plays the comedians against the monsters themselves. Scary Movie takes a broader, more explicit route through contemporary slasher and teen-horror conventions. High Anxiety is a fit if what you enjoy is suspense craft being turned into comedy, rather than monsters or slasher tropes.
Are spoof movies and parody movies the same thing?
They overlap, and everyday use often treats the terms as interchangeable. “Spoof” commonly describes a conspicuous comic imitation of a genre, film, or convention. “Parody” is a useful umbrella for imitating recognizable material in order to transform it for comic effect. Satire can overlap with parody but tends to focus more directly on ideas, institutions, or social behavior. There is no need to force a rigid boundary: Blazing Saddles, for example, spoofs the Western while also satirizing racism and power.
