Katie Kitamura’s Audition, shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, makes identity feel less like a settled truth than a role refracted through other people. Its two competing narratives ask readers to hold conflicting versions of a life in mind, unsettling the boundary between performance and private feeling. The book’s “endless reflection of the self” is an interpretive lens for that effect—not a phrase attributed to Kitamura or the Booker judges.

What is Katie Kitamura’s Audition about?

The novel opens with an unnamed actress meeting a young man in a Manhattan restaurant. Their conversation is surprising and unsettling, and the relationship between them becomes harder to interpret as the story proceeds. The official Booker book page describes that encounter as the beginning of further disturbances.

Ann Levin’s Associated Press review identifies the narrator as an actor of some renown who is rehearsing a play. The young man, Xavier, and the narrator’s husband, Tomas, become part of a shifting arrangement: the novel’s understanding of their relationships is reframed around its midpoint. Describing the change without resolving it preserves the experience the book is designed to create.

Why does Audition have two competing narratives?

The Pulitzer Prize finalist description calls the book’s structure “two competing yet seemingly unrelated narratives.” Their uncertainties, contradictions and congruencies explore how people understand themselves through roles such as partner, parent, creator and muse. Rather than offering one definitive account that explains the other, the narratives make the reader compare versions and notice what remains unsettled.

Kitamura has said she wanted contradiction embedded in the novel’s structure, including the experience of keeping two accounts of events in mind. In her August 14, 2025 interview with the Booker Prize Foundation, she put it plainly: “Reading the book requires holding two separate versions of events in your head at the same time.”

How does Audition reflect the self?

The book treats the self as something encountered through relationships and roles, not as a fixed identity that can be cleanly separated from them. The narrator is an actress, but performance is not confined to the stage: being a partner, parent or creator also involves expectations, interpretation and the possibility of playing a part.

The Booker judges describe the novel as dissolving the border between public performance and private feeling. That distinction matters because the narrator’s public competence does not erase her self-doubt or discomfort. The judges suggest readers may recognize her inadequacy, social unease and middle-aged ennui even if they have never stood on a Broadway stage. In that sense, the “reflection” is not simply an actress looking at herself; it is a person seeing how different roles and observers produce different accounts of who she is.

Is the ambiguity a puzzle to solve?

Audition invites interpretation, but its ambiguity is not merely a clue trail leading to one final answer. The Booker judges call the novel intentionally open to interpretation and point to its midpoint as a decisive structural experience. The Pulitzer description likewise emphasizes uncertainty alongside contradiction and congruence. Together, those descriptions suggest that readers should attend to how the narratives alter one another, rather than treating one version as a simple correction of the other.

Levin’s AP review compares the turn to a figure-ground illusion: what had seemed central can recede, while a different pattern comes forward. That is a critical reading, not a key that settles every uncertainty. The effect is to make the reader actively reconsider what a relationship, memory or role means when viewed from another angle.

What did Kitamura say about contradiction and motherhood?

In the same Booker interview, Kitamura said the novel began with “a desire to write about the long process through which children must necessarily grow up to become strangers to their own parents.” She also described wanting to write about experiences of love and motherhood that can feel mutually exclusive, and to make contradiction part of the book’s form rather than only its subject.

She added: “It’s either/or, and also and. As a culture, we’re becoming quite bad at holding a contradiction in our heads.” In Audition, that idea becomes a reading practice: two versions can compete without one immediately cancelling the other.

Why Audition matters on the 2025 Booker shortlist

The Booker Prize Foundation listed Audition among the six novels shortlisted in 2025. The judges’ comments connect its formal uncertainty to a contemporary culture in which private life increasingly becomes public display. The novel’s interest in performance therefore reaches beyond theatre: it asks what happens when the self is both lived and observed, and whether private feeling can remain distinct from the roles through which others recognize us.

The Booker book page reproduces the judges’ view that the novel persists in the mind and denies readers the resolution they instinctively crave. Other critical remarks on that page praise Kitamura’s minimalist, psychologically acute prose, while one reviewer argues that the ideas exceed the drama. These are evaluations rather than neutral facts, but they point to the book’s central wager: uncertainty is not a gap to be patched over so much as the experience the form is built to sustain.
