Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’s October 2023 photo feature pairs six images from Lauren Chan’s rookie shoot in the Dominican Republic with reflections she shared on set. The feature, styled in what SI called a Barbiecore look, is a photo diary-style look at the shoot—and at Chan’s thoughts on how beauty changes.
What the photo diary shows
Chan made her SI Swimsuit debut as a 2023 rookie. Photographer James Macari shot her first feature for the magazine in the Dominican Republic, according to SI’s October 18, 2023 photo feature and its rookie profile.
The October feature selects six photographs from the shoot and sets them alongside thoughts SI says it elicited from Chan while she was on set. The images pair vibrant, playful swimwear with a Barbiecore styling direction. They are a curated selection, not a complete record of every look or moment from the shoot.
The looks and photo credits
Captions in the October feature credit Cleonie Swim, Beach Riot (for two images), BANANHOT, Bromelia Swimwear and Ezili Swim. One caption also credits Ettika earrings. A separate image from the Dominican Republic shoot in Chan’s rookie profile credits MESHKI swimwear and New York Vintage earrings. These are image-specific credits, not a full wardrobe inventory.

What Chan said about beauty and change
The feature’s central reflection is that beauty is not fixed. Chan put it this way: “Beauty changes all the time—as an industry, personally, interpersonally.” She added, “I am who I am, I will be who I will be.”
Her advice for meeting change is rooted in care and connection: “If you meet those moments of change with care for yourself, a great community and hopefulness, then you’ll be okay.” The remarks give the photo diary a personal thread beyond its fashion credits: the images come from a particular shoot, while Chan’s words consider how people adapt to shifting expectations and to change in their own lives.

Chan’s favorite swimsuit from the shoot
In a separate June 2, 2023 SI story, Chan named a Bromelia tortoiseshell bikini photographed in a cenote as her favorite swimsuit from the day. SI identified the pieces as the Gabriela Triangle Top and Gabriela Tie Bottoms and said the photograph appeared on page 37 of the 2023 issue. The article’s listed price was specific to 2023 and should not be read as a current price or indication of availability.

In her April 2023 rookie profile, Chan spoke about authenticity and how representation in media can shape a person’s sense of belonging. SI editor in chief MJ Day praised her ambition, drive and focus. The October photo feature complements that profile with on-set reflections rather than a new biographical interview.
