He did not grow up reading comics
Stan has said he was not a comics reader as a child and first discovered comics around 2009 while preparing for the role. That made the source material a new part of his research, not a lifelong familiarity. CineMovie’s 2014 interview covers how he approached it.

He did much of the fight work he was allowed to do
Stan said he performed as much of the fight work as he was permitted to, working alongside the stunt department. The qualification matters: the action was a collaboration, not a claim that he performed every stunt himself. He explained the arrangement to CineMovie.
-
The metal arm gave him something physical to play
Stan liked having a tangible arm prop rather than relying only on a CGI effect. The physical object could inform how he moved and carried the character. He discussed the prop with CineMovie in 2014.
-
The arm changed as the films continued
The early arm prop was rigid and cumbersome; later versions became more mobile. In a 2019 interview, Stan also recalled that he had grown too big for the Civil War arm, which became tight enough to affect his circulation. Men’s Health reported his account of the prop.

How Bucky’s story and voice developed
-
Bucky’s fictional journey is not Stan’s biography
In the Marvel story, Bucky begins as Steve Rogers’s friend and a soldier, becomes a conditioned assassin, and later struggles to recover and live with his past. This is the character’s fictional arc—not a description of Stan’s life. Vanity Fair’s 2025 profile discusses the broad trajectory.
-
Stan and Anthony Mackie wondered what came after Endgame
Stan said he and Mackie wondered where their characters would go after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave that next chapter room to develop their partnership and separate identities. Stan discussed the question with British GQ in 2021.
-
The series gave Bucky more dialogue—and Stan a new task
Compared with the largely silent Winter Soldier, Bucky in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has more to say. Stan described the challenge as finding the character’s voice: “For this show I had to find his voice, in all senses, and do it in a way that was timely to what is going on in 2021.” British GQ published the interview on March 19, 2021.

The series connected superhero questions to real debates
Stan said the show’s treatment of race, identity and patriotism connected with events and debates beyond the Marvel story. That gave Bucky’s personal adjustment a place within a broader conversation about who gets to represent a nation and what its symbols mean. He spoke about those themes with British GQ in 2021.
