The premise that Hollywood has stopped embracing Dakota Johnson is not established by the available evidence. Her career includes studio films, independent projects, producing work and new collaborations. The more defensible explanation is a mix of one conspicuous commercial and critical setback, Johnson’s own selectivity, her criticism of Hollywood’s creative process, and the ordinary uncertainty of how individual projects perform.
What the evidence says about Hollywood’s response
There is no public casting dataset or independent record here showing that studios have broadly turned away from Johnson. The evidence instead describes a working actor who has continued to take roles, produce films and develop projects. The “20 reasons” below are therefore possible factors behind the headline’s perception—not 20 proven causes of an industry-wide rejection.
1. A broad rejection has not been demonstrated
The reporting reviewed does not establish a pattern of studios refusing to hire Johnson. Without data on roles offered, casting decisions or comparable actors, claims about Hollywood’s overall attitude remain unproven.
2. Her career has continued across studio and independent work
The Los Angeles Times reported that Johnson had worked steadily since The Social Network in 2010, appearing in both larger productions and smaller films.

3. She has also worked as a producer
The same report discusses her production work through TeaTime Pictures, including projects such as Daddio. Producing offers a route to help shape projects, rather than relying solely on acting roles selected by studios.
4. She has not ruled out another big-budget film
After Madame Web, Johnson told the Los Angeles Times: “There’s no part of me that’s like, ‘Oh, I’ll never do that again’ to anything.” That is at odds with the idea that one disappointing experience has made her categorically unwilling to do studio films.
Why Madame Web weighs so heavily in the discussion
5. The film received poor critical marks
Variety reported in 2025 that Madame Web had an 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes. That is a stark critical-reception figure, but it does not measure every viewer’s response.
6. Its domestic box office was a visible setback
Variety also reported $43 million in domestic box office for the film. This is a U.S. domestic figure, not a complete account of worldwide revenue, costs or profitability; it cannot by itself establish the film’s full financial outcome.

7. One film’s performance is not a career-wide verdict
A poorly received title can affect public perception and the conversation around an actor, but it does not prove that studios have changed their overall willingness to cast that person. The available figures describe Madame Web, not Johnson’s entire career or future prospects.
8. Johnson says the film changed from its original conception
In the Los Angeles Times interview, Johnson described Madame Web as changing from what it had started as. This is her account of the production, not independent confirmation of what caused particular creative decisions or the film’s reception.
9. She has criticized committee-led creative choices
Johnson said: “There’s this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body.” This is her critique of an industry practice; it does not independently show that such decisions caused her own casting outcomes.
10. The film became a convenient symbol for a wider debate
Because Madame Web was discussed as a failure and Johnson spoke candidly about its creative process, the film can stand in public conversation for broader complaints about studio filmmaking. That symbolism is not the same as evidence that Hollywood has rejected its star.

Project fit and Johnson’s own choices
11. She has said some rom-com scripts did not connect with her
Variety reported that Johnson found some romantic-comedy scripts offered to her lacking in “soul and heart.” Her comments suggest that she does not accept every project simply because it is available. They do not establish that she was receiving too few offers.
12. Materialists appealed to her for its characters and emotional honesty
Johnson described Materialists as different because of its characters and emotional honesty. That points to a preference for specific material, rather than a blanket rejection of a genre or large-scale productions.
13. She has emphasized healthy working conditions
In a July 2025 Variety interview, Johnson said: “I can’t waste time on toxic sets anymore, or in situations that are not fun or fulfilling or healthy.” This makes working environment part of her stated project criteria; it does not reveal how many offers she has declined or why.
14. Selectivity can look like lack of momentum from the outside
When an actor prioritizes fit, collaborators or working conditions, the projects they accept may be less frequent or less visible than a steady run of franchise roles. That is a reasonable interpretation of her stated preferences, not a documented explanation for any particular gap in her schedule.

Materialists complicates the rejection narrative
15. Director Celine Song actively wanted Johnson for the role
In an Associated Press interview, Song recalled meeting Johnson and contacting her producers and studio with the thought: “I think I’ve found my Lucy.” That is direct evidence of a filmmaker’s interest in casting her for Materialists.
16. Johnson pursued a meeting despite being told it might be too late
Johnson said she had initially been told the film was too far along for her to join, but she still wanted to meet Song. The account suggests a casting process involving timing and initiative—not a straightforward story of a studio refusing her.
17. The film’s opening shows an audience result, not a verdict on employability
Variety reported a $12 million domestic opening for Materialists in 2025. That is an opening-weekend figure, not a measure of the film’s eventual total or profitability, and it does not show how studios assess Johnson’s casting prospects.
18. Filmmaker interest and studio hiring are related but distinct
Song’s account establishes her enthusiasm for Johnson, while Johnson’s account describes how she sought a meeting. Neither alone reveals the full decision-making process among producers and the studio, or proves a general industry trend.

What her other career moves suggest
19. She was developing projects and producing in 2025
In July 2025, Variety reported that Johnson was developing a feature directorial debut, with final details still being arranged, and had wrapped shooting on Verity. These are statuses reported at that time; they should not be read as confirmation of either project’s status in 2026.
20. Her criticism of Hollywood does not mean she has left it
Johnson has criticized studios’ reliance on remakes, saying: “When something does well, studios want to keep that going, so they remake the same things, but humans don’t want that.” The remark, reported by GamesRadar+ in June 2025, reflects her opinion about industry habits. It is not evidence that studios have sidelined her.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The strongest case for why the headline resonates is the visibility of Madame Web’s poor critical reception and reported domestic box office, amplified by Johnson’s frank comments about its creative process. Her comments about project fit and healthy sets also indicate that her own standards may shape what she chooses to do.
But those points do not establish an industry-wide rejection. The reported career record includes ongoing acting and producing work, a director who sought her for Materialists, and projects in development or production as of July 2025. Without independent evidence about roles offered and casting decisions, the most accurate conclusion is that “Hollywood isn’t embracing Dakota Johnson” is a provocative framing—not a proven account of her career.
