This list uses that consistent definition and covers departures through the season 21 finale, the latest completed season as of October 7, 2026. It excludes Meredith Grey: although Ellen Pompeo stepped back from regular status, she continued to appear and remained central to the series. Actor explanations below are kept separate from each character’s fictional exit.
What counts as leaving the main cast?
This is a list of performers who left the series-regular cast, not a count of every character who has ever disappeared from the story. A later guest return does not undo a departure from regular status. TIME likewise treats actors in their series-regular capacity and excludes later guest appearances from its accounting (TIME, March 14, 2024).
The show’s roster can change, so cast listings are snapshots rather than a permanent record. ABC’s official series page is useful for current episode and cast information, but this article’s cutoff is the season 21 finale. It does not treat reported future exits as completed departures.
15 main cast members who left Grey’s Anatomy
1. Sandra Oh as Cristina Yang
When: Oh left after season 10. Why the actor left: Oh said she had considered the decision for a long time, used therapy to work through it, and felt she had given the role everything she could creatively. How Cristina left: Cristina moved to Zurich to lead a prestigious cardiothoracic surgery institute, pursuing a new professional chapter rather than dying or being written out abruptly. Oh’s comments were reported by ABC News on August 14, 2013.

15. Kim Raver as Teddy Altman
When: Raver’s first regular run ended in season 8; she later returned and rejoined the regular cast. Why the actor left: Her initial departure was a storyline decision tied to the character’s opportunity outside Seattle, rather than a publicly reported personal exit. How Teddy left: Teddy accepted a job at a military hospital in Germany. Because she returned in later seasons, this is an example of leaving the main cast without leaving the franchise permanently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why actor departures and character exits are not the same thing
A character’s destination is written by the series; an actor’s reason for leaving comes from the performer or production reporting. Those explanations do not always match. Cristina’s Zurich role and Alex’s Kansas reunion are fictional resolutions, while Oh and Chambers separately discussed their career decisions. Capshaw and Drew’s exits, by contrast, were reported as creative choices by the production. TIME’s 2024 retrospective counts more than 20 character deaths and departures by the show’s 20th season, but that broad tally is not an audited list of series-regular performers.
