Spoilers for AMC’s The Walking Dead and Tales of the Walking Dead. These 15 frequently discussed moments are not all proven plot holes. Some are apparent contradictions; others are unanswered questions, production choices, continuity slips, or character decisions viewers find implausible. The distinction matters: a mystery is not automatically a mistake, and an explanation for one scene does not settle every complaint about it.

What counts as a plot hole in The Walking Dead?

A plot hole is a contradiction in the story’s established facts or rules—for example, if a character knows something they could not have learned, or a rule changes without explanation. An unanswered question may be frustrating but is not necessarily contradictory. A continuity slip is a visible inconsistency between shots or scenes, while an implausible decision is a choice that strains credibility rather than breaking the story’s logic.

The list below uses “plot hole” in the way fans often do, but labels what each complaint actually amounts to. The available official and reputable sources explain some of the debate; they do not establish fifteen definite errors.

Walker behavior and the rules of the world

1. Walkers seem faster in some scenes than others

Viewers have long noticed that walkers can appear more or less nimble from one scene to the next. In a 2013 interview reported by the Los Angeles Times, creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman offered one explanation: “The more recently they’ve ‘turned,’ the more nimble the zombies are.” He also said variation helped keep viewers guessing. That is a creator’s explanation, not a comprehensive rulebook for every walker in every episode; a specific scene-to-scene mismatch would still need to be assessed on its own.

2. Some walkers appear to do things others cannot

Walkers’ apparent abilities and behavior have varied across the series and wider franchise. Executive producer Scott Gimple cautioned against treating each change as a universal new rule. In a 2022 AMC interview, he said walkers were “not changing across the board,” while allowing that “there might be different things in the mix.” That leaves room for story-specific variation, but does not provide one explanation for every unusual action viewers have noticed.

3. Where are the zombie animals?

The scarcity or absence of reanimated animals can feel like a gap in a world overrun by the dead. Kirkman’s explanation, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, was tied to the comic’s artistic choices: illustrator Charlie Adlard did not like drawing them. That speaks to adaptation and production, not to a fully explained in-universe rule about which creatures can turn.

4. The franchise’s walker variations do not amount to one settled explanation

Later stories have drawn renewed attention to walkers behaving differently. Gimple’s distinction between walkers changing “across the board” and “different things in the mix” is a useful caution: a localized or story-specific variation should not automatically be used to rewrite the rules for every earlier scene. Nor does that comment retroactively prove that every past difference was intentional.

Missing time, missing information, and unresolved events

5. Characters change during the six-year time jump

Some viewers may feel that a character’s new outlook or relationships arrive too abruptly after the series skips years. But the gap is deliberate. In an AMC article published November 15, 2018, executive producer Greg Nicotero said, “The things that have happened to them over the past six years, has shaped them into different people.” The same article quotes showrunner Angela Kang saying viewers were entering the middle of stories that had unfolded off-screen. Unshown development can leave the audience without connective detail; by itself, it is not a contradiction.

6. Important events happen off-screen

A time jump can make a major development feel as if it appeared from nowhere. Kang acknowledged that events viewers did not see could affect characters and the story going forward. That confirms off-screen change is sometimes part of the storytelling approach. It does not mean every missing explanation is satisfying—or that every supposed off-screen event can be assumed to have happened.

7. Sophia disappears and later emerges from the barn

The Season 2 reveal is often discussed as a timeline mystery: Sophia goes missing, the group searches, and she is eventually found among the walkers at Hershel Greene’s farm. AMC’s retrospective confirms the central event: Sophia emerges from the barn as a walker in Season 2, Episode 7, “Pretty Much Dead Already” (AMC’s episode retrospective). The reveal is canon. Questions about exactly when she turned, how she reached the barn, or which Greene family members knew require close attention to the episodes; the retrospective alone does not settle all those details.

8. A mystery is treated as a contradiction before it is answered

The Sophia discussion illustrates a broader problem with “plot hole” lists: an unresolved detail can be mistaken for a proven inconsistency. To establish a contradiction, a complaint needs to identify the relevant scene or dialogue and show how it conflicts with something the series has established. If the show simply has not supplied the detail, the more accurate label is an unanswered question.

Character choices that can feel implausible

9. Survivors sometimes make decisions that seem reckless

Kirkman acknowledged in his 2013 conversation with Conan O’Brien, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, that some survivor choices prioritize excitement over a perfectly coherent universe. That admission helps explain why a decision might feel engineered for drama. It does not identify or excuse every specific choice: whether a character’s action is inconsistent depends on what they knew, what options they had, and what the story had established about them.

10. A character does not act on information the audience expects them to use

These complaints often turn on a missing link: did the character actually know the fact, have time to act, or understand the danger? If the scene establishes that they knew and could respond, but the story ignores that knowledge without explanation, the case for a genuine inconsistency is stronger. If the knowledge is only assumed by viewers, it remains an interpretation rather than a confirmed plot hole.

Frequently cited complaints that need episode-level proof

The following are recurring fan complaints, not errors verified by the sources cited here. They are worth separating from established facts rather than presenting as settled failures.

11. Rick’s coma survival

Fans question how Rick survived in a hospital while society collapsed. A convincing verdict requires evidence from the relevant episodes about his condition, the hospital’s circumstances, and the timeline. The sources cited in this article do not establish that his survival contradicts the show’s rules.

12. Ammunition seems scarce, then plentiful

Complaints about ammunition can involve either story logic or visual continuity. A character’s supply changing between scenes would be a different kind of issue from the group’s access to ammunition varying over time. Without a specific episode and scene comparison, neither should be described as a verified series-wide contradiction.

13. Walker blood exposure does not always have the same consequences

Viewers sometimes ask why exposure to walker blood appears dangerous in one situation and survivable in another. To establish a rule conflict, a comparison needs to distinguish exposure from bites and account for the exact circumstances shown. The evidence cited here does not establish a universal rule or verify a particular contradiction.

14. Glenn’s apparent survival beneath the dumpster

The dumpster sequence prompted debate about how Glenn could survive the surrounding walkers. Whether the scene is implausible, adequately explained, or contradictory depends on the details shown and the later account. The sources cited here do not independently verify a specific error in that sequence.

15. Props or blood appear to change between shots

A cup, weapon, wound, or patch of blood changing position between cuts would be a continuity slip, not necessarily a plot hole: it may not alter the story’s underlying events or rules. These claims should be tied to precise shots before being called errors. No particular prop or blood mismatch is established by the sources cited here.

How to judge a suspected Walking Dead plot hole

  • Find the contradiction. Name the earlier rule, fact, or line of dialogue and the later scene that conflicts with it.
  • Separate what is shown from what is inferred. A viewer’s assumption about a character’s knowledge or a missing event is not automatically canon.
  • Check for a stated explanation. Creator and showrunner comments can clarify intent, but an interview explanation is not proof that every scene is consistent.
  • Account for omitted time. The series has deliberately skipped events, including the six-year period discussed by AMC in 2018.
  • Use the right label. Call a missing answer a mystery, a shot-to-shot mismatch a continuity slip, and an unlikely choice an implausible decision unless there is evidence of a genuine contradiction.

For readers curious about differences between the adaptation and its source, the Los Angeles Times’ interview with Kirkman identifies The Walking Dead comic books as the source material. The comics can offer a comparison, but a difference between the comic and television series is not evidence of a television continuity error.
