Vanessa Paradis is a French singer and actor whose career began with the hit “Joe le Taxi” when she was a teenager. Her work spans music, film and fashion; her relationship with Johnny Depp and their two children is one part of a much broader public biography.
1. She became famous as a teenager with “Joe le Taxi”
Paradis was 14 when “Joe le Taxi” broke through in 1987. Universal Music Japan says the single spent 11 consecutive weeks at number one in France. Its success introduced a young French singer to a much wider audience.
2. The song’s success did not mean every performance was easy
In a 2016 interview with the Festival de Cannes, Paradis recalled being booed while singing “Joe le Taxi” at MIDEM in 1988. It is a striking early-career memory: a hit song did not guarantee a warm reception in every room.
3. Her first album was M&J
Paradis’s early music career is closely tied to M&J. Sources differ on the album’s release context: Universal Music Japan identifies her debut single as arriving in 1987, while UniFrance describes it as the first single from M&J (1988). The album is a landmark of her breakthrough, but those accounts do not establish one definitive release date for every part of the project.

4. She built a substantial career in French cinema
Paradis made her film debut in Jean-Claude Brisseau’s Noce blanche. UniFrance dates the debut to 1990, while Universal Music Japan lists 1989; the exact year varies across those biographies. Her performance earned the César for Most Promising Actress, giving her acting career an early distinction independent of her pop success.
5. She worked with major musicians early on
Her albums show a career shaped by collaboration as well as performance. UniFrance documents Serge Gainsbourg’s work on Variations sur le même t’aime (1990) and Lenny Kravitz’s production of Vanessa Paradis (1992). These projects helped establish her as an artist working across different musical sensibilities.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. She thinks of film music as part of a larger whole
Asked by the Festival de Cannes about music in film, Paradis said she pays attention to it but considers the story, setting and actors more important. She compared music to “a pretty dress” that does not change a person’s soul but can make it “more sublime.” The remark reflects an interest in how music serves a film rather than simply standing apart from it.

12. She and Johnny Depp have two children
Paradis and Depp were together for more than a decade and have two children, Lily-Rose and Jack. CBS reported in 2013 that Depp described the separation, announced in 2012, as difficult and referred to 14 years together; a 2025 profile in Le Monde described the relationship as lasting 12 years. Because those accounts differ, the safest summary is that they were partners for more than a decade—not spouses.
13. Her children’s creativity is part of how she talks about family
In Le Monde’s 2025 profile, Paradis described her children as living in music and said their talent inspires her. That comment offers a rare glimpse of her perspective on their creative lives without reducing her own identity to motherhood.
14. She married writer-director Samuel Benchetrit
Le Monde reports that Paradis married French writer-director Samuel Benchetrit in 2018. The fact is important context when summarizing her personal life: Depp was a former partner, not her husband.
15. She continued working in film into the 2020s
Le Monde’s August 2025 profile discusses Paradis in connection with the film T’as Pas Changé. The article said at the time that the film was due in theaters on November 5, 2025; that release date is historical, not an upcoming event. The entry underscores that her screen career continued long after her teenage breakthrough.
