Norman Reedus is best known to many viewers as Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead, but his work and interests reach beyond the zombie drama. In interviews, he has described an unexpected route into acting, his motorcycle travels, and a few ways he helped shape Daryl. Here are 15 details, with personal recollections attributed to Reedus and older comments dated to the interviews in which he shared them.
How Norman Reedus got started
1. He was working at a motorcycle shop before acting
Reedus told WIRED that he got a job at a motorcycle shop in Venice, California, before his acting break. “I got a job at a motorcycle place in Venice California,” he recalled in the interview released March 9, 2020. Watch the WIRED interview.
2. His first acting chance came through an understudy role
In the same 2020 interview, Reedus said someone he met at a party asked him to understudy in a play. When the other performer failed to show up, Reedus had to go on. It was an unlikely first step into acting rather than a conventional audition story.
3. He lived in Spain as a teenager
Reedus later returned to Sitges, Spain, a place he said he had lived as a teenager, while filming an episode of Ride with Norman Reedus. He discussed the trip in an AMC interview posted in 2017.

AMC describes Ride with Norman Reedus as a series of motorcycle trips with a friend, visiting different cities and stopping at places including bike shops, tattoo parlors, and local restaurants. The format puts travel and encounters with local culture at its center, rather than treating the motorcycle as a prop.
7. The trips span more than one country
The show’s journeys take in different cities, and Reedus spoke about international travel on the series in his 2017 AMC Talk interview. The range of destinations makes the series a window on motorcycle communities and local scenes beyond a single hometown.
