Jennifer Lawrence’s public mishaps range from a very visible Oscar-night fall to stories she later told about herself. This is an editorial selection, not an official ranking: some moments were captured at live events, some come from her own recollections, and one is a scripted parody. The context matters as much as the cringe.

Oscar nights and award-show entrances

1. The 2013 Oscar-stage stumble

While walking up to accept the Academy Award for best actress for Silver Linings Playbook at the 85th Oscars, Lawrence fell on the stairs. The fall became part of the ceremony’s memorable-moments record in the Academy’s official archive. It was a live, highly visible mishap—not the red-carpet trip from the following year.

2. The 2014 red-carpet trip

At the 2014 Oscars, Lawrence tripped outside her car on the red carpet. CBS, attributing its account to ET Online, reported that she explained: “There was a cone outside my car and I ran over the cone,” then corrected herself: “The cone hit me!” The exchange made the incident funny without making it the same fall as her 2013 trip onstage. CBS News’ report covers her explanation.

3. The shot before an Oscars press interview

TIME’s 2015 retrospective included Lawrence taking a shot before an Oscars press interview. The detail is memorable because it is an unusual pre-interview ritual in the middle of a formal awards night; it is not, by itself, evidence that she was impaired or that anything went wrong. TIME’s retrospective presents it among a larger set of Lawrence anecdotes.

4. The after-party story she summed up in four words

In Vogue’s 2022 “73 Questions” interview, Lawrence was asked whether her first Oscars after-party was as wild as it seemed. Her answer was: “Oh yeah, I threw up.” It is her own later recollection, delivered in a light interview—not footage of the party itself. Vogue’s interview transcript records the exchange.

Live interviews and celebrity encounters

5. The Golden Globes phone rebuke

During a 2016 Golden Globes press exchange, Lawrence interrupted a reporter who was looking at his phone. TIME quoted her saying, “You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro,” and later, “We’re at the Golden Globes. If you put your phone down, you’d know that.” TIME also reported that reactions differed, with some observers finding her rude. The awkwardness is in the public confrontation; whether it was justified is a matter of interpretation. TIME’s account includes the context and reactions.

6. The Jon Stewart desk-sanitizer moment

TIME’s 2015 list recalls Lawrence telling host Jon Stewart he was weird, then applying hand sanitizer to his desk. The combination of blunt teasing and a conspicuous cleaning gesture gives the exchange its comic discomfort. It is best understood as a moment in a playful public interaction, rather than proof of any serious hostility. TIME’s retrospective describes it.

7. The Jack Nicholson interview interruption

During an interview setting at the 2013 Oscars, Lawrence had an uncomfortable interaction with Jack Nicholson, who approached while she was speaking with a reporter. TIME included the encounter in its 2015 collection. The tension is partly a matter of how an unexpected celebrity interruption reads on camera; it is not a polished, planned exchange. TIME’s retrospective identifies the moment.

8. An enthusiastic encounter with Bill Murray

TIME’s list also calls out Lawrence’s excited interaction with Bill Murray. The appeal is the contrast between an exuberant fan-like reaction and the relaxed informality of a celebrity encounter. “Awkward” here is an audience-facing label, not a documented claim that either person was uncomfortable. TIME’s retrospective includes the encounter.

9. The Cuba Gooding Jr. excitement

A similar entry in the same TIME retrospective focuses on Lawrence’s excitement around Cuba Gooding Jr. It is a brief social moment rather than a scandal or a mistake; what makes it stick is how openly delighted she appears. The awkwardness is subjective, and the point is the unfiltered energy. TIME’s retrospective lists it.

10. Videobombing Jeff Bridges

Another TIME entry is Lawrence appearing in the background of a Jeff Bridges interview. A videobomb is funny partly because it disrupts the expected focus of a formal interview, and Lawrence’s appearance turns a routine press moment into a small bit of chaos. TIME’s list includes the clip as one of its examples.

Small mishaps and unmistakable Lawrence stories

11. The mint spill

TIME’s retrospective includes Lawrence spilling mints. There is little at stake, which is precisely why the moment is relatable: a tiny, untidy accident becomes conspicuous when cameras and a public setting are involved. It is a recorded anecdote in TIME’s compilation, not a major career incident. TIME’s list describes it.

12. The tattoo with the misplaced “2”

Lawrence has told a story about getting “H2O” tattooed, with the “2” positioned incorrectly. TIME included the anecdote in its 2015 list. The joke is in the mismatch between the familiar chemical formula and the tattoo’s placement—not in any broader claim about her intelligence. TIME’s retrospective recounts the story.

13. The Fallon appearance about her most embarrassing moments

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November 2015, Lawrence appeared in a segment titled “Jennifer Lawrence Shares Her Most Embarrassing Moments.” The show’s listing says she shares her top two mortifying moments. That framing matters: these are stories she chose to tell in a comic interview, not necessarily spontaneous incidents captured as they happened. The Tonight Show’s official video listing identifies the segment.

14. The award-show stumble that became part of her public image

Lawrence’s 2013 fall generated a life of its own in coverage of award-show mishaps. TIME’s later retrospective put the stumble alongside a wide range of candid, funny, or chaotic moments. The fall itself is real; treating it as a defining personality trait is an editorial choice, not something the footage establishes. The Academy’s 2013 ceremony archive preserves it as one memorable moment from that show.

When the awkward interview was deliberately staged

15. Vogue’s awkward-interview parody

In November 2015, Vogue published “Jennifer Lawrence Nails the Awkward Interview,” a short directed by Cass Bird. Vogue described it as a parody of behind-the-scenes photo-shoot footage and celebrity interviewing. The staged discomfort is part of the joke, not evidence of a real interview disaster. Vogue’s description explicitly identifies the piece as parody.

How to read this list

The moments above do not all have the same evidentiary footing. The Oscar falls and phone exchange were public events; the after-party and tattoo stories are recollections; the Fallon appearance is a comedy interview; and Vogue’s awkward-interview short is scripted. TIME’s 2015 retrospective, “The 25 Most Jennifer Lawrence Things Jennifer Lawrence Has Ever Done,” supplied several candidates, but it was neither an official ranking nor a definitive list of the 15 moments here. The labels “awkward” and “embarrassing” describe how a viewer might read a moment, not a universal reaction or necessarily Lawrence’s own judgment.
