Emma Watson’s global fame began with Hermione Granger, but fame from a defining franchise is not the same thing as proof of acting range. The case that she is overrated rests less on a long record of universally rejected performances than on a narrower concern: whether her celebrity and public profile sometimes outpace what particular roles give her room to demonstrate. Reviews of The Circle support that question; praise for Beauty and the Beast and the reception of Little Women complicate any sweeping verdict.
Why the “overrated” argument starts with fame
Watson’s career became globally visible when she was cast as Hermione Granger in the first Harry Potter film in 2001. She played Hermione through the franchise’s final installment in 2011, giving audiences a decade-long association with one highly recognizable character. Britannica’s account of her career places that franchise at the center of her early acting history.
That history creates a reasonable critical question: when viewers judge Watson in later films, are they responding to the performance in front of them, or to the reputation accumulated around a beloved role? It does not answer the question by itself. Long-running fame can shape expectations and publicity, but neither proves that an actor is overrated nor establishes the quality of any particular performance.
What the strongest criticisms actually say
The Circle: a performance a reviewer found limited by the material
In a 2017 review of The Circle, the Guardian’s reviewer judged Watson somewhat better than in The Colony and Regression, while criticizing an uneven accent and a protagonist with little depth. Those are one critic’s assessments of this film and performance—not an objective diagnosis or a consensus among reviewers. The review nevertheless offers a specific basis for questioning whether Watson’s work in this role fully overcame the limitations the critic saw in it.

The Bling Ring: a role designed to break with Hermione
Watson took a markedly different part in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring (2013), playing Nicki, a fame-obsessed character. In a 2014 Los Angeles Times interview, Watson described Nicki as “superficial, materialistic, vain, amoral,” and said, “I realized that I hated her.” That account shows an effort to inhabit a character she disliked; it does not, on its own, establish how successful the performance was.
The Guardian’s 2017 profile reported that some assessments of Watson had characterized her as competent but sometimes safe, overrated, or miscast because of her fame. The same profile noted that publicity around The Bling Ring centered heavily on Watson relative to the other performers. Catherine Shoard, quoted in that profile, called Watson’s performance “well-toned” but said it was “afforded excess airtime.” This is a critic’s view of both the performance and its prominence, not a measured account of how all audiences or critics responded.

Her filmography is more varied than the label suggests
After Harry Potter, Watson appeared in films with substantially different tones and parts: The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), The Bling Ring (2013), The Colony (also known as Colonia), The Circle (2017), Beauty and the Beast (2017), and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019). The Los Angeles Times framed her move beyond Hermione as a conscious change in character type. That range of roles is relevant context, but a list of different projects cannot by itself establish that every performance succeeded—or failed.
Film scores show mixed reception, not an actor ranking
Rotten Tomatoes’ filmography page listed the following scores when accessed on October 7, 2026. These are film-level critic and audience aggregates, not ratings of Watson’s individual performances; scores can also change over time.

| Film | Critics | Audience | What the figures establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Circle | 16% | 21% | Low film-level scores; they do not isolate Watson’s contribution. |
| Beauty and the Beast | 71% | 79% | More positive film-level reception than The Circle; not a performance score. |
| Little Women | 95% | 92% | Strong film-level reception; it does not show how much credit belongs to any one cast member. |
The contrast undermines a claim that every film Watson joined was dismissed, but it cannot settle whether her acting in a given film deserved the attention it received. Britannica describes Little Women as acclaimed, and the Guardian’s review of Beauty and the Beast was favorable, calling Watson “a perfect Belle” in its headline. These are meaningful counterexamples to the idea that critical response to her work was uniformly negative.
Recognition and public profile are not performance evidence
Watson’s public profile extends beyond acting. Britannica reports that she graduated from Brown University with a degree in English literature in 2014 and was named a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador that year. British Vogue has covered her HeForShe and other gender-equality advocacy. Such visibility can help explain why discussion of Watson reaches beyond individual films, but it is not evidence for or against her acting ability.

She also received MTV’s first gender-neutral Best Actor award for Beauty and the Beast in 2017, according to TIME. That is a concrete sign of recognition, not proof that the award was either deserved or undeserved. The same distinction applies to celebrity attention: visibility is a fact about public prominence, while “overrated” is a judgment about the relationship between that prominence and the work.

A Guardian report published September 23, 2025, said Watson had not acted in a film since completing Little Women in 2018. Reporting on an interview with Hollywood Authentic, the Guardian quoted her distinguishing acting from the work of promoting a film: “I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying. But I do very much miss using my skill-set, and I very much miss the art.” She also said that promotion could become a larger part of the job than acting itself. Her comments help explain her professional perspective; they do not resolve critical judgments about her past performances.

So, is Emma Watson overrated?
“The most overrated actress in Hollywood” is not a conclusion established by the available evidence. It is a superlative that would require a defined comparison with other actors and a way to measure the gap between reputation and performance; the cited reviews, awards, and film scores do not provide that. A narrower argument is more defensible: Watson’s franchise fame and publicity can raise expectations, while at least one Guardian review found weaknesses in a later performance and in the character she was given to play.
That argument has limits. Other critics responded favorably to her as Belle, and Little Women received strong film-level scores, although neither fact can be treated as a direct measurement of Watson’s individual acting. The fairest judgment is therefore role by role: consider the character and script, identify what a named reviewer actually praised or criticized, and keep film popularity, celebrity, awards, and advocacy separate from performance evidence.
