There is no authoritative ranking of the East Coast’s “most haunted” places, and ghost stories are not proof of paranormal activity. This selection brings together 14 destinations known for their reported hauntings, folklore or dark history, while distinguishing documented history from legend and noting what visitors can experience. Check each attraction’s official site before traveling; hours, tours and access can change.
How to read this list
“Haunted” here means a site has a reputation, folklore or reported experiences associated with it—not that ghosts have been verified. The National Archives Foundation makes the distinction plainly: “While the haunted history of each of these historical sites is true, we’ll let you decide if ghosts really lurked in their halls.” The sites below are not ranked by paranormal activity. They are selected as places where a haunting reputation intersects with history or a visitor experience.
Visitor access and specific ghost stories are firmly documented for only some entries here. For the remaining destinations, confirm the particular legend, current access and tour availability with the site or a local historical authority before making plans; do not assume that a reputation means a building is open to the public.
Four East Coast destinations with documented visitor details
1. Eastern State Penitentiary — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Opened as an experiment in solitary confinement, Eastern State Penitentiary closed in 1971 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The National Archives Foundation recounts reports of shadowy figures and unexplained sounds, but these accounts remain reports, not evidence of ghosts. The historic site offers admission with audio, guide-led and self-guided interpretation. It does not permit independent paranormal investigations, including the use of EVP recorders or other paranormal equipment. 2. Dock Street Theater — Charleston, South Carolina
The National Archives Foundation describes the theater’s origins, its rebuilding and its later use as a hotel. A local ghost story connects the site with Nettie Dickerson; treat it as reported lore, not established history. The Foundation’s account is a useful starting point for the building’s history and the story, but check with the theater or a local visitor source for current entry and performance information: America’s Most Haunted.
3. Historic Lizzie Borden House — Fall River, Massachusetts
The house is associated with the 1892 Borden case and has been presented by its operator as a historic inn and museum with a haunted reputation. The operator lists house tours, cemetery tours, events and overnight stays. Its posted schedule says it is open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight; verify hours, tour availability and terms on the official website before setting out, since schedules can change.
4. St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum — St. Augustine, Florida
The museum lists several paranormal-themed options, including a Dark of the Moon ghost experience, an investigation-only experience, Lighthouse Ghost Tales and private ghost tours. These are visitor experiences, not proof of supernatural activity. The tower climb is weather dependent, and the museum provides accessibility and visit information alongside its offerings. More East Coast destinations to investigate
The following places are often raised in conversations about East Coast hauntings, but the available source material does not establish a specific haunting account, historical basis and current public access for each one. They are leads for trip planning—not verified claims that a particular building is haunted or open to visitors. Check local historical organizations, official attraction pages and tour operators for the exact site, story and access rules.
5. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
The Gettysburg area’s Civil War history makes it a natural destination for visitors interested in battlefield history and ghost lore. Identify the particular battlefield, building or tour you want to visit, then verify its operating authority, access and the source of the story. A general reputation for haunting does not mean every location is accessible or offers a ghost tour.
6. Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is another frequently mentioned East Coast destination for ghost tours and haunted-history travel. Choose a specific historic site or tour and check its operator’s account of the legend, route, dates and visitor arrangements; the city’s reputation alone does not confirm any individual haunting claim.

7. Salem, Massachusetts
Salem’s history and folklore attract visitors seeking dark-history and ghost-themed experiences. Distinguish documented events from later supernatural stories, and confirm the locations and hours of any museum, historic property or tour you plan to visit.
8. Connecticut’s Haunted History Trail
Connecticut’s governor’s office announced a state Haunted History Trail in September 2026, describing it as covering more than 130 locations. That figure refers to trail locations, not to verified hauntings or paranormal activity. Use the state announcement as a starting point, then verify individual stops and their current access before building an itinerary.
9. Historic hotels in coastal cities
Historic hotels sometimes build visitor experiences around local ghost stories, but the story and access arrangements differ from property to property. Confirm directly whether a hotel offers a tour or event, whether non-guests may participate, and whether the story is presented as folklore, guest report or documented history.

10. Historic theaters
Dock Street Theater is one example of a theater with a reported ghost legend. Other theaters may have their own stories, but verify each one with the venue or a historical source; a shared reputation for hauntings is not a substitute for site-specific evidence or current visitor information.
11. Historic prisons
Eastern State Penitentiary shows why a former prison can be worth visiting even without accepting its ghost stories: its history and interpretation stand on their own. For any other former prison, check whether it operates as a museum, whether tours run, and what restrictions apply. Rules about paranormal equipment vary by site.
12. Lighthouses and maritime sites
The St. Augustine Lighthouse offers a concrete example of a maritime attraction with dedicated ghost experiences and a weather-dependent climb. Other lighthouse stories and tours must be checked individually; access may depend on the operator, conditions and the particular event.

13. Cemeteries connected with local legends
Cemetery visits require particular care: a story associated with a burial ground does not establish that it is open for tourism. Confirm visiting hours, rules, ownership and whether any tour is authorized before entering. Respect posted restrictions and the site’s purpose as a place of burial.
14. Historic homes linked to notorious cases
The Lizzie Borden House demonstrates how a historic home can interpret a notorious case while also offering tours and overnight stays. For other homes, verify the historical account, the operator’s current offerings and whether a haunting narrative is local folklore or a marketing claim.

- For documented history: Prioritize a museum or historic site with clear interpretation, such as Eastern State Penitentiary.
- For an organized paranormal-themed experience: Check the attraction’s official event listing. St. Augustine Lighthouse lists several options; schedules and ticket terms can change.
- For an overnight stay: Confirm that lodging is currently offered and book directly with the property. The Lizzie Borden House lists rooms as well as tours.
- For sites with restrictions: Read visitor rules before bringing equipment or planning an investigation. Eastern State prohibits independent paranormal investigations and related equipment.
- For any destination: Recheck hours, ticketing, weather limits, accessibility and tour availability with the official operator shortly before travel.
What a haunted reputation can—and cannot—tell you
A haunting story may be part of a site’s cultural history, visitor experience or promotional framing. It does not establish that supernatural activity occurred. Treat documented dates, buildings and events separately from reported apparitions, unexplained sounds and local legends. That approach leaves room to enjoy the story while judging the historical record on its own terms.
Connecticut’s 2026 trail announcement reports more than 130 locations and cites 72.2 million visitors to the state in 2025. The latter is a statewide tourism figure, not a count of haunted-attraction visitors. It should not be used to imply that haunted tourism itself draws that many people.
