For an Oscars watch party, choose food guests can enjoy between awards without missing the show: make-ahead dips and cake, a warm pastry bite, and easy-to-grab snacks and sweets. The ideas below include published recipes from WBUR and the Academy, plus clearly labeled film-inspired pairings and suggestions from the Academy’s historical menu.
Build a menu that works around the show
WBUR resident chef Kathy Gunst frames the practical challenge well: “These days, I think about what to eat as we watch, what foods will satisfy but not pull me away from the show.” Her Oscars feature says its three recipes can be prepared entirely or almost entirely ahead of time. Plan around that: put out cold bites before the ceremony, then use a break to bake or warm anything that needs attention.
For a flexible spread, pick a dip, one or two substantial finger foods, a snack guests can graze on, and a sweet. Keep film references in the names or pairings; the food should still sound appealing to anyone who does not recognize the reference. The 2026 nominee tie-ins below are specific to Gunst’s March 12, 2026 feature, not evergreen pairings.
Dips and nibbles
“Song Sung Blue” cheese dip
Gunst’s published recipe combines blue cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and scallions, with charred scallion for garnish. Serve it with raw vegetables or chips; the feature also suggests chicken wings as an optional pairing. Gunst says the dip can be doubled or tripled, making it a useful centerpiece for a larger snack table. Follow the full WBUR recipe for quantities and method.

Nominee nachos
Food Network’s award-show recipe collection includes Nominee Nachos. Use the collection’s linked recipe for the actual ingredients and method rather than treating the name as a complete recipe. Nachos are best set out with toppings organized for quick serving, so guests can assemble a portion during a pause rather than queueing during a major category.
Smoked-salmon bagel bites for “Marty Supreme”
Gunst offers a bagel with smoked salmon as a film-inspired pairing for Marty Supreme. This is a serving idea, not a complete recipe in the feature: cut bagels into smaller portions and provide smoked salmon and any preferred accompaniments separately. The small format makes it easier to graze than serving whole bagels.
Warm finger food
Ham(net) and cheese turnovers
Gunst’s puff-pastry turnovers are filled with cooked ham, cheese, and herbs. Assemble them a day ahead and bake shortly before serving, or bake them before the show and serve warm or at room temperature. The first approach means a brief oven task during the party; the second trades freshly baked warmth for less ceremony-time attention. Use the full WBUR recipe for quantities and baking instructions.

Puff-pastry pinwheels
Food Network’s award-show collection also points to puff-pastry pinwheels. Consult its linked recipe for the filling and method; the collection listing alone does not establish a particular filling or dietary suitability. They fit the same make-ahead strategy as turnovers if the recipe’s directions allow assembly in advance.
Wagyu sliders, inspired by the 2022 Governors Ball
The Academy’s 2022 Governors Ball menu included Wagyu sliders, a substantial party-food inspiration rather than a home recipe provided here. Treat the menu as historical, not a description of a current ceremony. For a home version, choose a reliable slider recipe and prepare it separately; the Academy menu does not provide enough detail in its listing to reproduce quantities or instructions.
Snacks to graze on
Kevin Bacon popcorn
Food Network lists Kevin Bacon Popcorn among its award-show ideas. The playful name supplies the celebrity reference, while the collection’s linked recipe is the place to check how it is made. Set popcorn in bowls around the room so guests can help themselves without interrupting the program.

Caramel corn
Caramel corn also appears in Food Network’s collection. It is a sweet, hand-held alternative to a plated dessert; use the linked recipe for its ingredients and preparation rather than assuming a method from the title alone.
Norwegian open-faced sandwiches for “Sentimental Value”
Gunst suggests a Norwegian open-faced sandwich alongside Sentimental Value. The feature offers this as a culinary inspiration, not a full recipe. If you include it, choose a complete, dependable smørbrød recipe and label the finished toppings clearly, especially if you are serving guests with dietary restrictions.
Beans for “Frankenstein”
Beans are another film-inspired food idea in Gunst’s feature, connected to Frankenstein. No particular bean dish or full recipe is specified there. A pot of beans could make a more substantial option, but select and follow a separate recipe rather than presenting the reference as a tested or fully specified dish.

Gumbo for “Sinners”
Gunst names gumbo as a pairing for Sinners, but does not provide a full gumbo recipe in the feature. It may suit a party where guests can sit down with a bowl; for a grazing-focused viewing party, it requires more serving attention than a dip or finger food. Use a complete recipe from a trusted source if you serve it.

Almond and honey cake for “Bugonia”
Gunst’s cake uses almond flour and slivered almonds and can be made a day ahead. The recipe specifies a 9-inch round cake pan; a regular 9-inch pan lined with parchment or a springform pan is also acceptable. The springform is optional, not a requirement. See the complete WBUR recipe for ingredient amounts and baking directions.
Chocolate bark
The Academy’s Celebrate the Oscars at Home page lists Chocolate Bark among its home-celebration recipes. The Academy page is a recipe pointer; check the linked recipe material for quantities, technique, and any allergen details before making it. The Academy’s 2022 Governors Ball menu also included vegan chocolate bark, but that historical menu item should not be assumed to be identical to the home recipe.

Oscars éclairs and concession-stand cupcakes
The 2022 Academy Governors Ball menu included Oscars éclairs, while Food Network’s award-show collection lists concession-stand cupcakes. Both provide dessert-table inspiration, not complete instructions in the menu or collection overview. Choose the linked recipe for cupcakes, or a separate reliable éclair recipe, before planning ingredients or timing.
Apple pie or tart for “One Battle After Another”
Gunst suggests apple pie or tart as a film-inspired pairing for One Battle After Another. It is a broad dessert idea rather than a full recipe in the feature. A pie or tart works well as a make-ahead option when prepared from a complete recipe and sliced before guests arrive.
Academy-listed cocktails: Limelight Margarita and Old Hollywood Fashioned
The Academy home-celebration page lists both the Limelight Margarita and Old Hollywood Fashioned. Use its linked recipes for proportions and method; the page listing alone does not supply enough detail to reproduce either drink. Offer a nonalcoholic drink as well, and label alcoholic cocktails clearly.
How to plan the menu and timing
- Choose a mix of formats. Pair a dip and raw vegetables with a pastry or other substantial bite, a self-serve snack, and one dessert. That gives guests choice without making every item a last-minute project.
- Move suitable work earlier. Make the almond and honey cake a day ahead; assemble the turnovers a day ahead or bake them before the broadcast. Prepare the dip in advance according to its recipe, then arrange its dippers before guests arrive.
- Reserve the oven for one planned moment. If serving turnovers freshly baked, schedule that task for a break. If you want no cooking during the ceremony, bake them before it begins and serve warm or at room temperature as Gunst permits.
- Make dietary information visible. Do not call a dish vegetarian or vegan based on its name. The Academy’s 2022 menu explicitly identified a vegan oyster mushroom schnitzel, vegan roasted-root-vegetable goulash, and vegan chocolate bark; those labels apply to those historical menu items, not automatically to home adaptations or similarly named dishes.
- Use official recipes as starting points, not unexplained menu titles. The Academy’s home page lists recipes and links to further Governors Ball material. Follow the linked recipe itself for amounts, preparation, and suitability; the Academy’s 2022 menu is historical inspiration.
