Which Studio Ghibli movie has the best animation? There is no official ranking, so this list is an editorial judgment—not a studio verdict or a measurable score. It weighs four things across every film: movement and staging; background and color design; visual texture and distinctiveness; and how animation conveys scale, emotion, atmosphere, or action.

How these films compare

A striking still image matters, but animation is also about timing: a pause, a turn, a change in pace, or the way a character moves through a space. The ranking considers how each film’s visual choices serve its particular story, rather than treating detail or spectacle as automatic signs of superiority. Studio Ghibli’s official works catalogue establishes the films, not an authoritative order of animation quality.

The 10 Studio Ghibli movies with the best animation

1. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)

Its sketch-like visual character makes movement feel immediate and exposed. Lines seem to carry emotion as much as define bodies and scenery; when the film’s energy surges, that looseness can make the action feel less contained than a polished, carefully framed tableau. Its distinction is not simply that it looks different, but that its visual language supports a story shaped by memory, feeling, and change.

2. Spirited Away (2001)

The film makes a fantastical world feel navigable by giving its spaces different moods and demands. Chihiro’s movement through the bathhouse and beyond helps the viewer register both the density of the setting and her changing confidence. Transformations and unfamiliar creatures add visual surprise, while the staging keeps the emotional thread legible. The Academy’s record recognizes Spirited Away as the Animated Feature winner in the 2003 award cycle; that distinction is context, not proof that it must top every animation ranking.

3. Princess Mononoke (1997)

Its visual force comes from the collision of worlds: forest life and human industry, stillness and sudden violence. Creature movement and kinetic action give the film a sense of danger, while the contrast between environments makes the conflict visible before anyone explains it. The result is not action for its own sake; physical motion helps communicate the costs of opposing ways of living.

4. Ponyo (2008)

Ponyo gives water a lively presence, making it central to the film’s movement and atmosphere rather than a passive backdrop. Energetic lines and buoyant motion suit a story that sees the world with a child’s urgency. Its visual identity is strongest when land, sea, and characters seem caught in the same current.

5. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Where other films build momentum through action, My Neighbor Totoro rewards attention to small gestures and quiet pacing. Everyday movement gives the characters a lived-in presence, and the natural surroundings help ordinary moments feel open to wonder. Its animation makes patience expressive: a pause or a glance can matter as much as a dramatic event.

6. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Expansive environments and flight give the film room to make scale part of the story. Staging guides the eye through broad landscapes and action, while creature movement helps the world feel active rather than decorative. Its visual appeal rests on the tension between the size of the setting and the vulnerability of the people moving through it.

7. Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

Metamorphosis, machinery, and shifting architecture let the film turn instability into a visual principle. The world can feel playful and unsettled at once, and changes in appearance or space echo the characters’ own transformations. Its imaginative designs are most effective when they do more than surprise—when they make uncertainty part of the atmosphere.

8. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

Flight gives the film a recurring way to show both freedom and awkwardness. The movement of the city and Kiki’s physical comedy keep its everyday world lively, while the airborne scenes offer a changing view of that world. The animation’s charm comes from making motion feel practical and personal, not just magical.

9. The Boy and the Heron (2023)

Changing spaces, unusual creatures, and dreamlike transitions make this film’s visual world feel unstable by design. Its strongest effects come from the way those shifts alter the viewer’s sense of place and expectation. Rather than relying on a single visual mode, it uses change itself to build atmosphere.

10. The Wind Rises (2013)

Aircraft, weather, and dreamlike transitions give the film a visual language that moves between physical design and inward reflection. The contrast between grounded settings and imagined sequences helps connect the act of looking at machines with the hopes attached to them. Its animation is quieter than the most fantastical entries here, but that restraint suits its reflective mood.

What awards can—and cannot—tell you

Awards offer a useful record of recognition, but they do not settle a subjective comparison of movement, design, texture, or emotional effect. The Academy lists Spirited Away as its Animated Feature winner in the 2003 cycle. GKIDS identifies Oscar nominations for Howl’s Moving Castle (2006 cycle), The Wind Rises (2014), and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2015). These distinctions mark different kinds of recognition; they are not a comparative animation score.

Where to look more closely at the visual design

Watching for movement as well as composition can make a rewatch more rewarding: notice how a character enters a frame, how a pause changes its mood, and how a background shapes the sense of scale. For a closer look beyond the screen, Studio Ghibli’s international publications catalogue lists licensed art books for films including Nausicaä, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
