Only a handful of titles in the available evidence clearly fit “student-teacher romance,” and they range from romantic comedy to psychological thriller. Never Been Kissed is the lightest option, but its heroine is an adult posing as a high-school student; Miller’s Girl and The Piano Teacher treat teacher-student attraction as disturbing rather than sweet. This guide distinguishes those cases instead of filling a ten-film list with unsupported matches.
Which movies clearly fit the student-teacher romance premise?
The strict definition here is a film in which romantic or sexual attraction connects someone currently studying with that person’s teacher or professor. The five films below have sourced plot descriptions that support the connection, though the available information is more complete for some than for others.
| Film | Student context | Tone and relationship framing |
|---|---|---|
| Never Been Kissed (1999) | Adult reporter posing as a student at her former high school | Romantic comedy; the setup differs from a relationship involving a current teenage student |
| Miller’s Girl (2023) | High-school student | Psychological thriller; a dangerous liaison |
| The Piano Teacher (2001) | Young student at a Viennese conservatory | Austere psychological drama about control and repression |
| Children of a Lesser God (1986) | Adult deaf student and special-education teacher | Drama and love story; the teacher-student relationship is central |
| Of Good Report (2013) | High-school student | Dark thriller with a disturbing turn toward horror; available plot evidence is limited |
Never Been Kissed (1999): the comic exception
Josie Geller is a junior copywriter who returns to her former high school undercover to research teenage culture. She falls for English teacher Sam Coulson. Because Josie is an adult posing as a student, this PG-13 romantic comedy is an unusual fit—not a straightforward story about a teenager dating a teacher. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page describes the premise and lists the film as a romance comedy.
Miller’s Girl (2023): attraction framed as a thriller
Cairo, a high-school student, and her English teacher Jonathan Miller become involved after a writing assignment draws them closer. Netflix Tudum describes their connection as a dangerous liaison and presents the film as a psychological thriller, not a light romance. Writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett cautioned against simple moral labels: “No one is a perfect villain or a perfect victim. They don’t exist.” She added, “These characters are quite nebulous and gray, which I think is closer to real-life people.” Netflix Tudum’s film feature includes the synopsis and comments.

The Piano Teacher (2001): a destructive conservatory drama
Erika is a middle-aged piano professor at a Viennese conservatory; Walter is a young student whose desire becomes a destructive infatuation. Janus Films describes the story as an austere psychological drama about control and repression, so it is better approached as an unsettling examination of power and desire than as a conventional romance. Janus Films’ page for the film gives its synopsis and lists DVD and Blu-ray formats.
Children of a Lesser God (1986): an adult relationship in a school setting
John Leeds is a special-education teacher, and Sarah Norman is a deaf adult student. Paramount’s official synopsis calls their story a love story that develops from their teacher-student relationship; that is the studio’s promotional framing, not a neutral critical assessment. Sarah’s deafness is part of her character and context, not a romantic device. Paramount lists the drama at 119 minutes and rates it R. Paramount’s film page provides the synopsis and details.

Of Good Report (2013): a dark boundary case
This South African thriller concerns an obsessive relationship between a high-school teacher and a student. Critical descriptions characterize its progression as disturbing and increasingly horror-like. It belongs on a list only with that warning: it is not a date-night recommendation or a conventional romance. The available plot account is secondary rather than a studio or festival synopsis, so finer plot claims are not established here. The available overview cites coverage from Variety and The Guardian.
What is a near match, rather than a strict match?
An Education (2009)
Jenny is a schoolgirl who meets David, an older man who introduces her to adult social life. Sony’s synopsis does not identify David as her teacher, so the film is an adjacent age-gap story, not a strict student-teacher romance. Sony Pictures’ page for An Education lists its premise and physical-media formats.

How should you choose among them?
- For a romantic comedy: Choose Never Been Kissed, keeping in mind that Josie is an adult undercover.
- For an unsettling contemporary thriller: Choose Miller’s Girl, which centers a high-school student and her teacher.
- For austere psychological drama: Choose The Piano Teacher, set in a conservatory and focused on destructive desire.
- For a drama involving adult characters: Choose Children of a Lesser God.
- For a darker thriller near horror: Consider Of Good Report, with the caveat that the available plot details are limited.
- For an older-man/schoolgirl story without a teacher connection: Try An Education as a near match.
Why the distinction matters
“Student-teacher romance” can describe very different situations: an adult pretending to be a high-school student, a high-school student and her teacher, or an adult conservatory student and professor. It can also make a disturbing power imbalance sound like a playful romance. Checking the student’s age and educational setting, the teacher’s authority, and the film’s actual tone gives a more accurate guide than treating every age-gap story as the same kind of movie.
