A reputation or reported victim total alone is not proof.
“Hitman” is narrower than “gangster” or “notorious killer.” The ten figures below come from a secondary list of candidates, but the available sources do not substantiate every biographical claim or establish a verified order. The entries therefore emphasize what can responsibly be said, distinguish legal outcomes from allegations, and avoid treating claimed totals as confirmed counts.
How this ranking is defined
The ranking focuses on modern-era cases and figures associated with targeted killings connected to organized criminal work or payment. Murder, Inc.—the U.S. group of professional killers described by the FBI as murdering for the mob in the 1930s and 1940s—is a significant setting, but it is not a stand-in for contract killing in every country or era. One secondary “Top 10 Deadliest Hitmen” list supplies the candidate pool, not a verified ranking or a reliable basis for totals. The 10 figures
1. Richard Kuklinski
Kuklinski is placed first on WatchMojo’s list, which repeats claims about a large number of victims. Those claims should not be mistaken for a proven count: the available sources here do not independently establish the totals or separate alleged killings from convictions. His place on this list reflects his prominence in accounts of alleged contract killing, while the limits of the evidence prevent a confident numerical comparison.
2. Joseph Barboza
WatchMojo associates Barboza with the Patriarca crime family and gives an alleged murder count. That number remains an allegation in the source available here, not an independently corroborated total. His inclusion reflects the reported connection to organized criminal violence; the specific count is not treated as established.
3. Giovanni Brusca
WatchMojo says Brusca claimed a high number of killings. A self-reported figure, as represented by a secondary source, is not an audited tally. The available material does not establish that total, so it cannot serve as a factual measure of his place in this ranking.

4. Frank Abbandando
WatchMojo associates Abbandando with Murder, Inc. The FBI confirms the group’s broad historical role as professional killers working for the mob, but its overview does not independently verify every biographical detail or allegation attached to individual names on the secondary list. Abbandando’s placement reflects his association with that historically consequential organization, with that qualification in mind.

Reles is also associated with Murder, Inc. in WatchMojo’s list. The FBI’s account establishes the organization’s place in U.S. organized-crime history, not every claim about Reles individually. His significance here comes from that reported association and the importance of the group, rather than from a claimed victim total.
6. Thomas Pitera
WatchMojo includes Pitera among its candidates, but the material available here does not provide primary case records or independently verify all particulars attributed to him. That makes confident statements about specific killings or totals inappropriate. His inclusion is therefore more cautious than a biography built around unverified claims would suggest.

7. Alexander Solonik
Solonik appears on WatchMojo’s candidate list, but the available sources do not independently validate all the list’s particulars about him. Without that corroboration, this entry does not present reported details as settled fact. His place reflects his inclusion in the secondary list, not an independently measured ranking of lethality.
8. The Murder, Inc. network as historical context
Murder, Inc. is not an individual, so it cannot fairly be counted as a person in a list of ten. Its history does, however, explain why Abbandando and Reles are discussed in the same frame: the FBI describes a professional killing group serving the mob in the 1930s and 1940s. That context is well established at the organizational level, while claims about each member require their own evidence.

9. Why a notorious gangster is not automatically a hitman
John Dillinger illustrates the distinction. The FBI describes him as a bank robber and gang leader; that profile does not establish him as a contract killer. FBI: John Dillinger His notoriety alone is not grounds to include him as a confirmed hitman.

10. The limits of the list itself
The available candidate pool does not support a defensible, evidence-based ranking of ten individuals with comparable legal outcomes and verified conduct. It names several people, but it does not supply consistent primary documentation for all of them. The final places should therefore be read as part of an editorial selection, not as proof that these figures outrank every other historical candidate.

A conviction for a particular murder, an allegation about additional killings, and a person’s own claim are different kinds of evidence. WatchMojo’s list includes reported totals and, in at least one case, a claimed total; those figures are not independently verified by the official sources cited here. Treating them as comparable counts would turn uncertainty into false precision.
- Convictions establish legal outcomes for specific charges, not necessarily a person’s full history.
- Allegations and estimates require attribution and corroboration; they are not convictions.
- Self-reported totals are claims, not audited counts.
The FBI’s Murder, Inc. overview supports the organization’s broad historical context, not every personal claim attached to members by a secondary list. Likewise, its profile of Dillinger supports his identification as a bank robber and gang leader, not as a contract killer.

What the FBI’s murder-for-hire context does—and does not—show
The FBI’s archived 2007 article says that murder for hire with an interstate nexus became a specific federal crime in 1958. It reported that the Bureau typically worked between 70 and 90 such cases a year and handled 78 in fiscal year 2006. A contemporary FBI article frames murder-for-hire investigations around prevention and describes cases involving attempted plots. Special Agent Janelle Miller, head of the FBI Violent Crimes Unit, said, “The names change, the story doesn’t,” but added that there is a threshold: “It can’t just be, ‘I’m going to kill my lawyer,’ and that’s it.” Special Agent Ingerd Sotelo explained that saying someone should die is different from taking action to put a plan in motion.
