Ford Mustangs have appeared on screen as Bond-chase convertibles, racing-film transport, a San Francisco legend and a customized heist-car centerpiece. This is a curated selection, not a ranked top ten: inclusion reflects a car’s prominence in its film, public recognition and documented cultural afterlife. Ford’s accounts firmly establish six entries; the remaining four are included with narrower claims where film-specific details are not established.
Early screen appearances and racing-film Mustangs
1. Goldfinger (1964)
Ford South Africa describes a so-called “’64-and-a-half” Mustang convertible in a chase over Swiss mountain roads. Ford calls the appearance one of Mustang’s earliest in a movie. Ford South Africa’s Mustang movie history and Ford’s 2024 cultural-history feature document the appearance.
2. Grand Prix (1966)
In this racing drama, James Garner’s character drove a 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 along roads above Monte Carlo, according to Ford South Africa. The car’s role links the Mustang to a film centered on motorsport rather than making it merely a passing background vehicle.
The Mustang roles that became cultural touchstones
3. Bullitt (1968)
The Highland Green Mustang GT fastback in the San Francisco chase became one of the model’s best-known film appearances. Ford’s sources differ on its model-year label: Ford South Africa identifies it as a 1967 Mustang 390 GT Fastback, while Ford’s 2018 account calls the production cars 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks. The safest description is the film’s Mustang GT fastback, with the model-year discrepancy kept explicit rather than silently choosing one account. See Ford South Africa’s account and Ford’s 2018 account of the Bullitt Mustang.

Two Mustangs served different production roles: Steve McQueen drove the hero car, and a second car was used for jumps. The hero car resurfaced publicly in 2018 after a long period out of view. The film’s legacy also reached beyond the original: Ford says Bullitt-inspired tribute editions followed, including an edition offered in limited numbers in South Africa in 2019. Ford South Africa calls it “probably” the most famous movie Ford; that is the company’s judgment, not an objective ranking.
4. Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)
The 2000 heist film made Eleanor—a gunmetal-gray, customized Mustang presented as a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500—its featured car. Ford describes replicas built from standard 1967 Mustangs, an important distinction: the movie depiction and its replicas should not be taken as proof that every Eleanor is a factory Shelby. Ford’s descriptions appear in its 2024 cultural-history feature and South African movie-history feature.

5. Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)
The original film belongs on a list of Mustang movie appearances, but the Ford retrospectives cited here focus on the 2000 remake and do not establish the original film’s exact Mustang variant. It is therefore best treated as a separate appearance without assigning it a model year or trim on this evidence. Its Eleanor should not be conflated with the distinct featured car in the 2000 film.
Other Mustang appearances
6. K9 (1989)
Ford identifies the car in the dog-and-car-wash comedy sequence as a 1965 Mustang convertible with its top down. The appearance demonstrates how a Mustang could serve a comic set piece as well as a chase or action role. Ford’s account is in its 2024 cultural-history feature and South African movie-history feature.

7. Tokyo Drift
A Mustang Classics catalog lists a 1967 Fastback conversion associated with Tokyo Drift. That listing is a lead to an appearance, not enough to establish the exact film configuration or its status as a factory model. Accordingly, the entry is included without presenting the conversion as an original Shelby or making a stronger claim about its screen role. Mustang Classics catalog.
8. John Wick
The same Mustang Classics catalog lists a conversion associated with John Wick, but does not by itself establish the film car’s precise configuration. The association supports including the movie as a Mustang appearance, not confidently assigning a model year or trim. Mustang Classics catalog.

9. A Hoonicorn screen appearance
Mustang Classics also has a Hoonicorn listing. A catalog entry alone does not establish a specific film appearance, exact configuration or movie role, so it is not possible to responsibly attach this item to a particular movie from that listing. It is a useful pointer, but not a fully documented film-specific entry. Mustang Classics catalog.
10. Need for Speed (2014)
The 2014 film is another candidate for a Mustang-focused movie list, but the Ford sources cited here do not substantiate its precise build details. It is included as a qualified appearance rather than given an unverified model-year or trim description.

How to read movie-car labels
A car described in publicity as a Shelby or GT500 may be a customized movie build, a conversion or a replica rather than an untouched factory example. Eleanor illustrates why the distinction matters: Ford says replicas were made from standard 1967 Mustangs. Bullitt offers a different caution: Ford sources use different model-year labels for the production cars. When those details matter, distinguish the film depiction, the production vehicle and any later replica or tribute edition instead of treating them as interchangeable.
