The Seraphites are a religious survivor faction in Seattle in The Last of Us. “Scars” is the name the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) uses for them. Their faith traces back to a woman known as the Prophet, but the group’s later beliefs and violence should not be treated as a simple reflection of her original teachings.
Who are the Seraphites?
The Seraphites are a community whose identity is rooted in a religious tradition that emerged in post-outbreak Seattle. In the Season 2 story, they are caught in a violent conflict with the WLF. Neil Druckmann described them, in discussion of the source game, as people who believe they are following their prophet and restoring balance to the world.
The group’s fuller backstory comes from The Last of Us Part II. In the official podcast about the game, writer Halley Gross says the Prophet helped people during the outbreak and that later followers took her teachings in a more radical and violent direction. Gross summarizes the distinction by saying that, as Lev would put it, followers “took her teachings in a direction that she had not originally intended.” Naughty Dog’s official podcast, Episode 7, discusses that history.
Are the Seraphites and the Scars the same group?
Yes. “Seraphites” is the neutral name used in official game commentary; “Scars” is the WLF-associated label for the same faction. TheWrap’s Season 2 Episode 4 explainer uses “Scars” for the religious group opposing the WLF. The name is associated with the visible facial scars described in that episode account, but the specific origin or ritual meaning of those marks should not be assumed beyond what the episode reporting establishes. TheWrap’s explainer covers the show’s use of the label.

Who was the Prophet?
The Prophet was the woman whose teachings became the foundation of the Seraphites’ faith. TIME’s guide to Season 2, Episode 3, describes the group as founded in Seattle around her teachings. Gross’s account adds an important distinction: the Prophet’s early guidance is presented as helpful to people facing the outbreak, while later followers made it more extreme. The Prophet and the faction’s subsequent practices therefore should not be collapsed into a single viewpoint. TIME’s Episode 3 guide introduces the group in the show.
Why are the Seraphites and the WLF fighting?
Their conflict is best understood as an escalating cycle of retaliation, not as a settled account of which side first caused the war. Gross says the original blame has been lost to history as each side answers perceived wrongs with further violence.

The factions also represent different forms of post-outbreak order. Druckmann characterizes the WLF as a militaristic force, while the Seraphites organize around religious belief and the Prophet. Gross says the WLF began with civilians and former Fireflies resisting a corrupt Seattle government, then grew more aggressive. Neither description makes the conflict morally simple: both communities have hardened over time.
What does Season 2 show about them?
TIME reports that Episode 3 introduces people fleeing a war near Seattle, whom viewers familiar with the game can recognize as Seraphites; Ellie and Dina later encounter their dead bodies. TheWrap’s account of Episode 4 places Ellie and Dina in the middle of an active WLF–Scars conflict.
