Several female heroes appeared before Wonder Woman, whose first appearance was in All-Star Comics #8 in December 1941. The documented examples below include newspaper-strip and comic-book characters, but they do not make a verified list of ten: early sources use “superhero” inconsistently, and the available records do not establish ten candidates’ original publication dates. Here, “before Wonder Woman” means a documented appearance before December 1941; where a character’s superhero presentation came later than her first appearance, that distinction is noted.
Why the definition matters
“Created before” can refer to a character’s first publication, not necessarily the moment she was presented as a superhero. The format matters too: a newspaper strip and a comic book are different kinds of publication, even when both feature a costumed or powered heroine. To compare early characters fairly, keep three dates or milestones separate: first appearance, first superhero presentation, and the date of Wonder Woman’s debut.
Wonder Woman first appeared in All-Star Comics #8 in December 1941, according to Guinness World Records. The Library of Congress overview identifies several female heroes who appeared before her, while individual classification can still be debated.
Female heroes with documented pre-Wonder Woman appearances
Fantomah — February 1940
The Library of Congress dates Fantomah to February 1940 and includes her among the heroines who appeared before Wonder Woman. Don Markstein’s Toonopedia describes a comic-book heroine with a dual identity and superpowers, but notes that some readers find her too unusual to fit the superhero category. She is an important early example, though calling her unambiguously the first female superhero would overstate the evidence. Library of Congress; Don Markstein’s Toonopedia.

Lady Luck — June 1940
The Library of Congress lists Lady Luck as appearing in June 1940, well before Wonder Woman’s December 1941 debut. That makes her part of the pre-Wonder Woman history of female comic heroes, without settling broader disputes over who deserves the “first superheroine” label. Library of Congress.
Invisible Scarlet O’Neil — June 1940
Also dated to June 1940 by the Library of Congress, Invisible Scarlet O’Neil belongs on a list that includes newspaper strips as well as comic books. Her inclusion illustrates why the scope of a “first” list needs to be explicit: excluding newspaper strips would change which early heroines qualify. Library of Congress.

The Library of Congress dates Miss Fury to April 1941 and identifies her creator, Tarpé Mills, as the first female artist to create a superheroine. The Guardian likewise describes Miss Fury as preceding Wonder Woman by eight months. She is a notable example of both early superheroine publication and a woman creating a heroine in the period. Library of Congress; The Guardian; Don Markstein’s Toonopedia.
Phantom Lady — August 1941
The Library of Congress places Phantom Lady’s comic-book debut in August 1941, four months before Wonder Woman’s cited first appearance. She is among the clearest comic-book examples in the pre-Wonder Woman group documented by the Library of Congress. Library of Congress.

When a character’s debut and superhero identity differ
Ma Hunkel becomes the Red Tornado
Ma Hunkel appeared in 1939, but Guinness World Records notes that she was not initially presented as a superhero. Her superhero presentation as the Red Tornado came in 1940. Counting her by first appearance yields one date; counting when she took on a superhero role yields another. That distinction can change the order of any early-superhero chronology. Guinness World Records.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a verified list of ten
The cited material supports several pre-December 1941 examples, but it does not establish ten names through independently checked original issue or strip records. Sheena is sometimes raised as an earlier jungle heroine, including through British comics appearances, but the available evidence here does not adequately establish her publication chronology or settle whether she fits the superhero definition. Adding her—or other remembered candidates—to reach ten would turn an uncertain list into a false claim of completeness.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
A defensible expanded chronology would need to compare each candidate’s original format and first publication, when she first took on a superhero role, whether she had powers, a costume or secret identity, and how reliable sources classify her. Until those points are documented for ten characters, the useful conclusion is narrower: female comic and strip heroes appeared before Wonder Woman, but a consistent, verified ten-name ranking is not established by the cited sources.
