Spoilers for Wicked: For Good. Elphaba survives the scene that appears to show her melting. Fiyero is alive as the Scarecrow, and the two leave Oz together. Glinda, however, believes Elphaba is dead and stays behind. The ending reunites the friends emotionally through “For Good,” then sends them onto separate paths.
What happens to Elphaba and Glinda?
The film’s final reveal is that Elphaba’s apparent death is an escape: she survives the melting scene. Fiyero, transformed into the Scarecrow, is alive, and he joins her as she leaves. The audience sees that they survived; Glinda does not. She remains in Oz believing her friend is dead.
That split in knowledge shapes the ending. Elphaba and Glinda reconcile, but they cannot resume their friendship side by side. Elphaba departs with Fiyero, while Glinda stays and takes on the public responsibilities attached to her identity as Oz’s symbol of Good.
Does Elphaba die in Wicked: For Good?
No. The apparent melting is a false death: Elphaba survives and uses the moment to escape public capture. The film shows her alive afterward with Fiyero, but it does not establish that Glinda learns the truth. The ending depends on the difference between what the audience knows and what Glinda believes.

Why does Glinda stay in Oz?
Glinda remains in Oz and steps into the public role associated with being Good. She acts on the belief that Elphaba is dead; the film does not show her secretly knowing that Elphaba escaped. Her choice to stay gives the ending its political as well as personal dimension: Glinda takes responsibility in Oz, while Elphaba leaves it.
What does “For Good” mean in the ending?
The song is the friends’ farewell and their recognition that they have changed one another. It marks a genuine reconciliation, not a reversal of their circumstances. They can affirm their bond, but the audience knows Elphaba is leaving while Glinda remains behind under a different understanding of what happened.

Calling the ending hopeful, tragic, or redemptive is a matter of interpretation. Its concrete outcome is more divided: Elphaba and Fiyero survive and depart; Glinda stays, believing she has lost Elphaba.
How is the film ending different from the Broadway musical?
The film gives the audience a clear survival reveal for Elphaba while keeping Glinda outside that knowledge. That altered emphasis makes the separation especially explicit: the audience knows Elphaba and Fiyero are alive and leaving, but Glinda’s public life continues on the basis of Elphaba’s apparent death. TIME described the film’s ending as a surprising twist compared with the Broadway musical.

This comparison concerns the film adaptation and the musical as discussed in that coverage; it should not be taken to mean every stage production presents its ending in precisely the same way. The key difference for understanding the film is the audience’s certainty about Elphaba’s survival alongside Glinda’s belief that she is gone.

Director Jon M. Chu described his tonal aim in a November 2025 interview with The Atlantic: “It’s not about going darker. It’s going deeper.” He also said the finale could have been made larger and more conventionally spectacular, but in rehearsal he wanted to stay with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s faces as they sang. That choice keeps the focus on the friends’ parting rather than turning the last moments into another large-scale set piece.
