Netflix’s Trainwreck: Poop Cruise revisits the 2013 Carnival Triumph emergency, when an engine-room fire and resulting electrical damage left a cruise ship without key systems. Here are five points the documentary’s official synopsis and TIME’s reporting establish about the voyage and the conditions aboard.
What happened on the Carnival Triumph?
The incident occurred on February 10, 2013, according to TIME’s account. Netflix describes the voyage as a four-day round trip from Galveston to Cozumel that began as a luxury cruise before an engine-room fire changed the trip. Netflix released its documentary in the United States on June 24, 2025.
Netflix’s official synopsis says the fire destroyed electrical cables supplying the ship. It lists propulsion, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning and flushing toilets among the systems affected. That summary establishes the documentary’s account of the breakdown; it is not an independent technical investigation into the precise engineering sequence or cause.
Five things to know about the documentary and the incident
1. The voyage was meant to be a four-day round trip
The planned itinerary ran from Galveston to Cozumel and back. Netflix presents it as a luxury cruise whose course changed after the onboard emergency. The contrast between a short vacation and a disabled ship is central to the documentary’s premise.

2. An engine-room fire led to widespread electrical disruption
Netflix says the fire destroyed cables supplying the ship, affecting systems needed for propulsion as well as refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning and toilets. Its synopsis describes the ship as left drifting without power for propulsion. The public accounts cited here do not establish a fuller technical explanation of the fire or the ship’s systems.
3. Toilets and sanitation became the defining image
Netflix highlights toilets that would not flush and raw sewage leaks. TIME describes improvised sanitation measures, including red biohazard bags. That detail comes from TIME’s reporting; it should not be mistaken for an independently verified engineering finding. The breakdown of ordinary sanitation is what gave the incident—and the documentary—its enduring public shorthand.

4. The disruption reached beyond sanitation
TIME reports that passengers endured heat without air-conditioning, slept on deck and faced improvised food service amid refrigeration problems. Those details show how an electrical failure affected basic comfort and food handling, not just the ship’s movement and toilets.
5. The reported scale and duration depend on the source
Netflix’s synopsis says 4,000 passengers and crew were affected. TIME describes 4,000 passengers aboard and says they were stranded for almost a week. These are each source-attributed descriptions: they should not be combined into a single exact headcount or converted into a precise number of days.
