Julie Newmar made a rare public appearance at The Hollywood Show in Burbank in January 2026, when Parade reported she was 92. The event was described as her only planned public appearance that year—not as a confirmed retirement. Newmar is also the namesake of the 1995 comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, in which she appears briefly near the end.
What is known about Julie Newmar’s 2026 appearance?
Parade reported on January 13, 2026, that Newmar had appeared at The Hollywood Show in Burbank. The article described her as 92 at the time. It did not establish the exact day of her appearance, and that event-time age should not be read as a statement of her age now.
Parade said the appearance had been announced as Newmar’s only public appearance of 2026. That wording reflects the plan reported around the event; it does not verify whether she appeared publicly later in the year.
What did Newmar and the event organizer say afterward?
Parade reported that Newmar shared a message thanking attendees: “Thanks to all the wonderful people I met at Hollywood Show. Thank you everyone for being there.” The quotation is as relayed by Parade.

Why is Julie Newmar in the title of To Wong Foo?
The film’s full title is To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Released in 1995, it follows three drag queens on a road trip. Newmar inspired the title and makes a brief cameo near the end; she is not the film’s lead performer. Masterworks Broadway’s biography likewise distinguishes the film’s story from Newmar herself.

In a 1995 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Newmar explained that the name “Wong Foo” came from a signed photograph of her that writer Douglas Carter Beane had seen at a New York restaurant called the China Ball. The restaurant was on 44th Street, east of Broadway, and no longer existed by the time of the interview. Newmar said the photograph had been taken when she was 18. She described the homage as a tribute: “The tribute to me, yes, is yummy because Hollywood is the fountain of youth. It’s like being reborn again.”
Newmar also described the comedy’s spirit in that interview: “There’s not an underlying message to this film any more than love. Appreciate yourself. And also have fun.” She called its style farce, adding, “Farce is like champagne, you must be light and airy.”
