“Funnier than Garfield” is a matter of taste, not a measurable verdict. If you like Garfield’s cat-centered comedy, these four strips offer worthwhile alternatives: one is another cat-led gag strip, one builds humor around a pet household, one takes a poetic and surreal turn, and one leans toward warmth and animal-protection themes. The available documentation supports these four recommendations, not ten fully sourced profiles.
How to choose a comic like Garfield
Rather than rank comedy as if there were an objective winner, consider what you want from a funny cat comic: a feline lead, bickering between pets, unconventional storytelling, or a gentler tone. The first two recommendations below are contemporary-feeling character contrasts; the other two offer a classic formal experiment and a warmer animal-centered approach.
Four comic-strip cats to try
1. Heathcliff: another cat in the lead
For readers who want a cat-centered strip rather than an ensemble, Heathcliff is the most direct alternative here. The official site describes the strip’s creator, history, and present creative stewardship. Its history page says more than 50 Heathcliff book and comic-book titles have been published, with over a million copies in print; the page does not state when that figure was recorded. 2. Get Fuzzy: cat attitude in a pet household
Get Fuzzy centers on cat Bucky Katt, dog Satchel, and their human, Rob Wilco. Andrews McMeel describes the cat’s attitude as a core part of the humor, making this a good pick if you enjoy verbal character comedy and the friction of a cat-and-dog household. The syndicator lists a dozen compilation books, including The Dog Is Not a Toy and Take Our Cat, Please. 3. Krazy Kat: a poetic, modernist classic
If you are open to something less like a modern gag strip, Krazy Kat is a singular classic. PBS American Experience dates George Herriman’s creation of the comic to 1911 and its launch as a strip to 1913, and describes it as poetic and modernist. In an interview with The Comics Journal, cartoonist Bill Watterson called it “a completely unique strip.” That is Watterson’s appreciation, not an objective claim that every reader will find it funniest. 4. Mutts: a warmer cat-and-animal perspective
Mutts is a better fit if you want gentleness alongside the humor. The strip’s official About page identifies Mooch as its cat character and discusses the comic’s history and animal-protection themes. That framing points to a warmer alternative to a strip built primarily around a cat’s antics; it does not mean every installment has the same tone. See Mutts’ official About page.

Why this list stops at four
The title’s “10” is a playful promise, but the reliable details available here substantiate four entries. Adding six more names without dependable information about their characters and humor would make the list less useful, not more complete. A local library’s International Cat Day comics roundup is another place to explore cat-comic reading, but it is not enough on its own to support six additional profiles here.
