Netflix sells the season as action-packed; the critical response is mixed, with reviewers also pointing to problems with pacing, storytelling, and Geralt’s characterization. The result is a consequential handoff, but the available critical evidence does not establish it as a uniformly propulsive fantasy epic.
Is Liam Hemsworth good as Geralt?
Hemsworth takes over from Henry Cavill, who played Geralt in the first three seasons. That casting change is a production fact; whether Hemsworth’s performance works is a matter of critical judgment. The reviews available here disagree in tone, but the change puts a new screen presence and characterization at the center of a season that must also carry forward an established ensemble.
The Guardian’s review is sharply critical of Hemsworth’s charisma and the storytelling, while RogerEbert.com focuses on pacing and repetition as well as noting the action. Those responses give viewers a useful caution: the season’s lead performance and its narrative momentum are not beyond dispute. They do not, however, represent a universal critical verdict.
How does Hemsworth compare with Henry Cavill?
The cleanest comparison is between what each actor brings to the role on screen—not speculation about either actor’s intentions or the reasons for the recasting. Consider Geralt’s physical presence, voice, chemistry with returning cast members, and how the writing gives him room to define himself. The critical responses cited above raise questions about Hemsworth’s screen presence, but they do not provide a consensus verdict across all those dimensions.

For returning viewers, the practical adjustment is that the character now has a different performer, while Geralt remains part of the same central trio with Yennefer and Ciri. The season’s success as a handoff therefore depends not only on Hemsworth’s individual performance but also on whether the writing makes this Geralt feel coherent within the continuing story.
Is Season 4 action-packed and propulsive?
Netflix’s trailer coverage describes the season as action-packed, but that is promotional language, not an independent assessment of the finished episodes. RogerEbert.com notes action beats while criticizing the pacing and describing parts of the story as repetitive. Taken together, those observations suggest an important distinction: action can make a scene energetic without making the larger narrative move at a compelling pace.

The season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri on separate journeys across a war-torn Continent. That structure creates room for several storylines, but momentum also depends on how clearly those threads connect and develop. Critical coverage raises concerns about pacing and narrative clarity, so “propulsive” is better understood as a claim to assess than a description on which reviewers uniformly agree.
What is Season 4 about?
The central trio remains Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, now pursuing separate paths across a Continent at war. Netflix describes Geralt as a mutated monster-hunter for hire in a world where people can be more wicked than beasts. Keeping to that broad premise is useful for new or returning viewers: the official synopsis establishes the season’s divided journeys without requiring a more detailed plot summary.

Season 4 is the penultimate season. Netflix has said Season 5 will be the final chapter, placing this installment within the story’s concluding stretch rather than presenting it as a standalone endpoint.
Is Season 4 worth watching?
The season is most likely to interest viewers who want to continue the story of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri and are willing to accept a new actor in Geralt’s role. Those chiefly looking for consistently brisk storytelling should weigh the reported pacing and narrative concerns alongside the action. The available reviews support a mixed recommendation, not a claim that every viewer will respond the same way.

Netflix identifies the series as based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, and the Season 4 finale is titled “Baptism of Fire.” That connection makes Sapkowski’s novels a natural next step for viewers curious about the source material. It does not, on its own, demonstrate how closely the season follows particular passages or establish the full extent of its adaptation choices.
