Spoilers for season 2, episode 8: Maggie does not kill Negan. After stabbing him and pursuing him, she finds him grieving over Ginny, who has died and reanimated. Maggie gives Negan the chance to put Ginny down. Her decision is not forgiveness: Hershel still leaves with the Dama, and New Babylon takes the Manhattan methane facility, leaving the city’s political future unresolved.
What happens in the season 2 finale?
The finale is episode 8, “If History Were a Conflagration,” which AMC lists as originally airing June 22, 2025. Its episode listing describes Maggie making a painful choice while Negan puts on a show.
Negan hosts Bruegel’s faction for a church meal, with walkers concealed beneath the banquet tables. The gathering becomes violent, and Bruegel and Perlie Armstrong end up under Negan’s control. Negan stages a lineup and uses the familiar “eenie, meenie” ritual. He forces Bruegel to inhale methane, sets him alight, then strikes him with Lucille. The scene’s staging and weapon deliberately recall Negan’s murder of Glenn, which Maggie witnessed.
Does Maggie kill Negan?
No. Maggie stabs Negan in the back before he can kill Perlie, then goes after him. At Ginny’s cell, she finds that Ginny has died from her infection and become a walker. Negan is grieving. Maggie does not kill him; instead, she gives him a blade so he can put Ginny down.

That is mercy in the immediate moment, not absolution. Maggie has not made peace with Glenn’s murder, and the episode does not show her forgiving Negan or repairing their relationship.
Why does Maggie spare Negan?
Seeing Negan grieve over Ginny interrupts Maggie’s pursuit, but the choice also reflects her recognition that killing him will not undo the past or fix what has broken between her and Hershel. Her decision is best read as an attempt to stop another destructive act—not as a cure for her grief or a declaration that Negan is safe to trust.

The distinction is central to the ending: Maggie can choose not to kill Negan and still carry anger, distrust, and pain. Their history remains part of their relationship rather than disappearing with her decision.
What happens to Hershel?
Maggie returns to Hershel and tells him killing Negan would make their situation worse. Hershel is angry that she did not follow through and leaves with the Dama. Maggie says she will stay in the city and be there if he needs her, but the finale does not resolve their conflict.

Hershel had hoped that his mother killing Negan would let them start over. Maggie rejects that as a false solution. He chooses to go with the Dama, who has encouraged his belief that he can help shape a new world. The episode leaves the nature and future of that bond open: the Dama’s influence may involve manipulation, but Hershel’s next steps are not settled.
What does New Babylon’s takeover mean?
New Babylon’s forces enter Manhattan and take the methane facility. The resource has drawn competing factions because it can power the city, so the takeover shifts control of an important asset. It does not establish what New Babylon’s rule will mean for Manhattan’s inhabitants or whether local factions will accept it.

That makes the takeover a political cliffhanger, not a resolved outcome. The episode confirms who has seized the facility; it does not show what comes next for the city.

The finale sets personal choices against a larger struggle over Manhattan. Maggie and Negan continue forward with their shared history still active, while Maggie’s relationship with Hershel remains fractured. At the same time, New Babylon’s occupation changes who controls the methane without revealing whether that power will bring stability or further conflict.

AMC’s May 22, 2025 interview with Lauren Cohan offers season context: Cohan described the characters’ growing familiarity with New York and the people competing to control it, with Manhattan’s resources drawing people from the mainland. That framing supports reading the methane plot as part of a wider contest for power, but it does not answer what New Babylon’s control will mean after the finale.
The episode’s closing riddle points toward the tension between a painful, familiar past and an uncertain future. It offers no neat reconciliation: Maggie’s choice may interrupt a cycle of violence, but neither her family conflict nor Manhattan’s political future is resolved.
