The Waterfront is a 2025 Netflix crime drama about a North Carolina fishing family fighting to keep its business—and its grip on one another—from coming apart. Its strongest case is the combination of a capable ensemble, coastal atmosphere and high-pressure family melodrama. But it is not an unqualified triumph: the show’s familiar crime-and-legacy framework and uneven tonal control may frustrate viewers looking for something genuinely fresh.
What is The Waterfront about?
Created by Kevin Williamson, The Waterfront follows the fictional Buckley family in Havenport, a fictional coastal North Carolina town. Its fishing business is in trouble, and a series of personal and criminal crises pull the family deeper into the fight to hold on. Netflix describes the drama as inspired by true events; it is not a factual reconstruction or a true-crime account about a literal Buckley family.
Harlan Buckley (Holt McCallany), the family patriarch, returns to exert control after health problems. Belle (Maria Bello) runs the fishery, while their adult children Cane (Jake Weary) and Bree (Melissa Benoist) are caught up in the family’s business and personal turmoil. Netflix’s trailer coverage frames the story around the endangered fishing empire and its coastal setting.
The series premiered on June 19, 2025, with all eight episodes released together. Netflix lists it as TV-MA. Watch The Waterfront on Netflix.

What works: the cast and coastal family drama
The central appeal is the pressure cooker of a family business where professional survival and private loyalties are inseparable. The Buckleys’ conflicts give the crime plot a personal stake: the question is not only whether the business can survive, but what its members will do to protect it. McCallany, Bello, Benoist and Weary anchor the ensemble, with the family’s diverging needs supplying the drama’s most effective source of friction.
The setting also gives the series a distinct texture. Williamson has said the story draws on personal roots, and the show was filmed in and around Wilmington, North Carolina, according to Netflix Tudum’s creator interview. That context helps explain the local focus; it does not make the fictional story documentary evidence about commercial fishing communities.

Williamson, whose earlier credits include Scream and Dawson’s Creek, has described the subject ambition as bringing commercial fishing into a family drama. In Netflix Tudum’s trailer coverage, he said, “We’ve never really seen a story about the commercial fisherman told before in any sort of dramatic way in a family drama.” That is the creator’s stated aim, rather than proof that the series breaks entirely new ground.
Where the series may divide viewers
The show’s familiar ingredients—an imperiled family enterprise, criminal entanglements and the struggle over who gets to wield power—can make it easy to keep watching, but they also invite comparison with other prestige family-crime dramas. The Daily Beast’s June 19, 2025 review praised the cast while criticizing the execution as derivative and finding little of Williamson’s characteristic wryness. That is a pointed counterargument to the view that The Waterfront is one of the year’s best shows, not a verdict shared by every viewer.

The most useful way to approach the series is to weigh its atmosphere and ensemble against its originality and tonal consistency. If you want a coastal family saga with crime stakes and a full season available to binge, its setup may be enough to pull you in. If you need unusually fresh plotting or a sharply controlled comic edge, the familiar framework may feel like a limitation.
Should you watch The Waterfront?
It is worth trying if you enjoy ensemble dramas about family power struggles, precarious businesses and crime. The eight-episode season gives the story room to build across a single binge, while its North Carolina setting distinguishes the premise from a generic boardroom or city-underworld drama. The recommendation is qualified: the cast and atmosphere make a persuasive case, but the series’ derivative qualities keep “brilliant” from being a settled description.

Is there a second season?
As of Tom’s Guide’s August 26, 2025 report, Netflix had canceled the series after one season. The same article reported that it had led Netflix’s global Top 10 for three weeks and cited a 68% Rotten Tomatoes score at that time. Those are dated secondary-source reports; the score is a snapshot, not a current rating or a measure of whether the show is right for you.
