What happens in the Season 2 finale?
“If History Were a Conflagration” is Season 2, Episode 8 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. AMC lists its original air date as June 22, 2025. AMC’s episode listing identifies the finale, while AMC Networks’ May 15, 2025 schedule announcement says the season aired Sundays on AMC and AMC+ through June 22. Its central setup was Maggie and Negan trapped on opposite sides of a growing fight for Manhattan.

At a church gathering, Negan turns Bruegel’s banquet into an ambush: walkers hidden beneath the table send the gathering into chaos. Meanwhile, the Dama urges Maggie to kill Negan, presenting it as a way to free herself and Hershel. Hershel supports the plan. Maggie acknowledges that she has never recovered from Glenn’s murder, then sets out to act.
Negan kills Bruegel with methane and fire. When Negan turns toward Perlie, Maggie stabs him in the back—but does not finish him. Later, she finds Negan crawling toward Ginny’s cell and picks up Lucille. Ginny has died and turned. Seeing Negan’s grief, Maggie chooses not to kill him.

Why does Maggie spare Negan?
The finale makes Maggie’s choice a break in the cycle of revenge, not a sign that she has forgotten Glenn or suddenly become Negan’s friend. She goes into the confrontation intending to kill him, after acknowledging the grief she still carries. The decisive change comes when she sees him grieving Ginny. The scene alters what Maggie does in that moment; it does not undo what Negan did or settle what his actions mean to her family.
Afterward, Maggie and Perlie help Negan reach an apartment, where Perlie removes the knife. Maggie tells Hershel she did not kill his father’s murderer and says she will stay in the city in case Hershel needs her. The immediate choice about Negan is settled, but the effects on Maggie and Hershel’s relationship remain open.

What does the ending leave unresolved?
Maggie, Negan, and Perlie decide to move forward together, but the agreement is tentative. In its June 22, 2025 finale coverage, TVLine describes them as deciding to work through what happened. That is not the same as reconciliation or a guarantee that trust has been restored.
The broader conflict also continues. New Babylon forces enter the city, while the Dama remains with Hershel. The finale closes the question of whether Maggie kills Negan, but leaves the Manhattan power struggle and the family tensions in play.

How did Scott M. Gimple describe the finale’s closure?
In a TV Insider interview published June 22, 2025, Walking Dead universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple said of the season-ending character resolution: “Something had finally been achieved. Something that was a long time coming, and something incredibly difficult to get to.” His comment describes the closure reached at that point; it was not a declaration that the series had ended.
Gimple also said in that interview that he saw more story to tell, while declining to confirm or deny a third season. That was his answer in June 2025, not a statement of current status. AMC’s official Dead City series page now lists Season 3 episodes and describes Maggie and Negan’s “newfound alliance” as challenged.
