Season 3, episode 1 of The White Lotus, titled “Same Spirits, New Forms,” opens with gunfire and a body in the water, then rewinds a week to the guests’ arrival at a Thailand resort. The premiere brings back Belinda and Greg, introduces a new ensemble, and plants mysteries around a resort owner, a business associate, and the identity of the person in the water—without resolving any of them.
What happens in “Same Spirits, New Forms”?
A meditation turns into a crime-scene mystery
The episode begins at the Thailand resort, where Zion is meditating with Amrita, a wellness staffer. Gunshots interrupt the session. Zion takes cover and sees a body in the water, but the premiere does not identify either the victim or the shooter. The Los Angeles Times’ recap describes the opening and the episode’s shift in time.
One week earlier, the guests arrive
The narrative jumps back a week to the guests arriving by boat. That leisurely introduction to the resort contrasts with the gunfire in the opening and establishes the season’s familiar murder-mystery frame: we have seen the danger, but not what led to it.
Who returns, and who is new?
Belinda is back with a work assignment
Belinda, whom viewers met in Season 1, is in Thailand to learn about the resort’s wellness program and bring what she learns back to Hawaii. The Associated Press describes her trip and Thailand’s broader place in the season.

A new guest ensemble checks in
The newcomers include the Ratliff family; Rick, who is travelling with his younger girlfriend Chelsea; and longtime friends Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate. The resort’s early introductions include wellness and hospitality workers, among them Mook, as well as security guard Gaitok. These overlapping guest and staff groups give the arrival scenes their social texture before the cold open’s mystery catches up with them.
Greg’s presence connects this season to the last
Greg, last seen in Season 2, is at the resort with a younger girlfriend. Belinda notices him. The episode offers that encounter as a pointed piece of continuity, not an explanation of what Greg’s presence will mean.

Which mysteries does the premiere leave open?
- Who is in the water, and who fired the shots? Zion sees a body after the gunfire, but the premiere does not name the victim or shooter.
- Why is Rick asking about Jim Hollinger? Rick asks about the resort owner and reacts when he learns Jim has gone to Bangkok. The episode does not explain the source of Rick’s interest.
- What is behind Timothy’s reporter call? A reporter contacts Timothy about a former business associate and Brunei-related reporting. The premiere leaves the implications unresolved.
- Why is Greg back in Thailand? Belinda spots him at the resort, but the episode does not yet clarify the significance of his return.
These are questions the premiere sets up, not answers it supplies. The Wrap’s recap also notes Timothy’s call, Rick’s question about Jim, and Greg’s return.

Monkeys appear around the resort, and Amrita asks the group to “calm our chattering monkey minds,” as TVLine’s recap records. The monkey image can be read alongside the meditation language as a suggestion of restless thoughts, but the premiere does not provide a definitive symbolic key.

Mike White described the season’s themes as “death and Eastern religion and spirituality,” according to W Magazine. That framing fits the premiere’s juxtaposition of meditation and mortality, but it does not turn every image into a fixed allegory. The title, “Same Spirits, New Forms,” likewise invites a reading of a new destination and cast repeating familiar human impulses. Luxury, self-interest, and the resort’s promise of reflection sit uneasily beside one another from the start.
The guest scenes also expose how visitors talk about the people around them. In one exchange with Chelsea, Chloe describes the bald white men she sees in Thailand as “LBHs. Losers back home,” a line reported by The Wrap. It is a character’s dismissive label, not a neutral description of the people she is talking about.
