Simon Pegg and Curtis Armstrong directly describe themselves as nerds; a TIME profile identifies Rivers Cuomo as a “nerd self-referrer.” Other familiar names are described that way in search-result snippets or are included in a roundup for nerd-adjacent credentials—not for saying they use the label. Here are ten names, with those distinctions made clear.
What counts as self-proclaimed?
For this list, a celebrity qualifies as self-proclaimed only when they describe themself as a nerd, or when a reliable profile directly reports that self-identification. A technical degree, a science-related career, or playing a science-fiction character is not enough on its own. The strength of the evidence matters, so the entries below distinguish direct statements from reported descriptions and less firmly supported claims.
Direct self-identification and reported descriptions
1. Simon Pegg
In a 2011 interview about his memoir, actor and filmmaker Simon Pegg said, “I took a risk of self-proclaiming my nerdism in the name of wordplay.” He discussed how the word’s meaning changes over time and connected the label to his enthusiasm for genre stories. His screen work includes Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul, and Scotty in the Star Trek reboot. Maximum Fun’s interview also describes his memoir, Nerd Do Well.
2. Curtis Armstrong
Actor Curtis Armstrong gave one of the clearest first-person accounts in a 2017 interview. He said that he had always considered himself a nerd and that “the idea of writing the nerd narrative, the nerd’s progress, born a nerd, raised a nerd, that has always been a part of who I am.” He also named his interests: “I tend to be a classic horror film nerd, meaning ’30s and ’40s, music nerd and a book nerd. A book collector.” Motif’s interview provides both statements.

3. Rivers Cuomo
A 2014 TIME profile by Joel Stein calls Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo a “nerd self-referrer”—the journalist’s description, not a direct quotation from Cuomo. Stein reports on Cuomo’s Shakespeare-focused Nerd Nights and a conversation about Julius Caesar. That supports a reported self-identification, but it should not be presented as a verbatim self-label. Read the TIME profile.
Names described as nerds in search-result snippets
The next two names appear in relevant publication search-result descriptions, but the underlying articles could not be reviewed for this account. They are plausible entries, not as firmly documented here as Pegg or Armstrong; no direct quotations are attributed to them.

4. Chris Hardwick
A Windy City Times result for a 2012 article describes comedian and presenter Chris Hardwick as a “self-confessed nerd” and says the piece discusses his comments on nerd culture. Because the full article was not accessible, that characterization should be treated as provisional rather than as a verified direct quote from Hardwick. Windy City Times lists the article as “Nerd up: Chris Hardwick embraces his inner geek”.
5. Daniel Radcliffe
An NME search-result description from November 2022 calls actor Daniel Radcliffe a “self-professed nerd in many ways.” The article itself was not accessible for verification, so the wording is best understood as NME’s reported characterization, not a confirmed quotation from Radcliffe. See NME’s article listing.

Four celebrities with nerd-adjacent credentials, not proven self-labels
These four names appear in a Computerworld roundup about celebrities’ “secret (nerdy) life.” The biographical details make the connection understandable, but the roundup’s reported credentials do not establish that the people themselves call themselves nerds. They are included to clarify the difference between a nerd-associated background and an evidenced personal label.
6. Masi Oka
Computerworld reports that actor Masi Oka double-majored in mathematics and computer science at Brown University and worked at Industrial Light & Magic. Those facts describe his education and career, not a self-identification as a nerd. Computerworld’s roundup is the source for this background.

7. Trent Reznor
Computerworld reports that musician Trent Reznor pursued computer engineering at Allegheny College. That academic detail alone does not show that he calls himself a nerd.
8. Brian May
Computerworld points to Queen guitarist Brian May’s astrophysics work and popular science writing. Those activities connect him with science, but they are not evidence of a self-applied nerd label.

9. Bill Nye
Computerworld describes Bill Nye’s engineering education, Boeing employment, and science television work. These are career and education details, not proof that he has described himself as a nerd.
10. “Weird Al” Yankovic
Computerworld reports that musician “Weird Al” Yankovic majored in architecture and points to nerd-themed work. Neither fact, on its own, establishes that he uses the nerd label for himself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the list
The entries do not all meet the same evidentiary standard. Pegg and Armstrong supply explicit first-person statements; Cuomo is described by a journalist as a self-referrer; Hardwick and Radcliffe are supported here only by search-result wording; and the last four have nerd-adjacent biographies without established self-identification. That distinction keeps the question focused on who calls themself a nerd, rather than who seems intelligent, technically skilled, or interested in science and genre fiction.
