The Union has a neatly mismatched spy-comedy premise: a New Jersey construction worker is recruited for an espionage mission by his former high-school sweetheart. That setup gives Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry a built-in reunion story as well as an action assignment. Netflix’s official materials establish the premise and genre mix, but they do not provide enough evidence to judge the actors’ chemistry, comic timing, or how well the film’s action works on screen. So the fairest verdict is a qualified one: the pairing and premise may appeal if you want a light spy adventure, but the promise of a “kick-ass duo” is not, by itself, a reason to expect a successful film.
What is The Union about?
Netflix describes the 2024 film as an action comedy and spy adventure. Mike, a New Jersey construction worker, is drawn into an espionage mission by Roxanne, his long-lost high-school sweetheart. Netflix Tudum’s plot description places the mission in Europe and mentions high-speed car chases; those details establish the film’s intended scale, not how effectively its set pieces play out.
The reunion is more than a meet-cute attached to a spy plot. Mark Wahlberg said Mike sees Roxanne as the love of his life and has stayed put hoping she might return. That gives the premise an emotional hook: Mike is not simply an ordinary person pulled into extraordinary work, but someone whose feelings may complicate his response to the person recruiting him. Whether the film develops that motivation beyond the setup is not something the official descriptions can confirm.
Do Wahlberg and Berry make a convincing duo?
The central attraction is the contrast built into the roles: Mike comes from an ordinary working life, while Roxanne arrives with a secret-agent mission and a shared past. It is a strong framework for a two-lead action comedy because it can make their relationship matter to both the jokes and the danger. Berry’s character has the recruiting role; Wahlberg’s has the fish-out-of-water entry point.

But a promising dynamic on paper is not the same as screen chemistry. The available official materials establish the characters’ history and the casting, not whether the performances make the reunion feel romantic, funny, or tense. That distinction matters for a film whose pitch depends on the pair carrying several jobs at once. The title’s “kick-ass duo” description should be treated as promotional enthusiasm, not a critical finding.
Does the spy-comedy mix sound appealing?
Netflix classifies The Union as comedy, action-adventure, and spy entertainment. The premise gives each element a potential role: Mike’s unfamiliarity with espionage can generate fish-out-of-water humor, the mission can supply action, and the former-sweethearts history can give the leads a personal stake. The same combination also creates a balancing act. If the comedy, romance, and mission pull in different directions, the story may feel less cohesive; the supplied plot information does not establish how well the finished film handles that balance.

The organization at the center of the story is fictional. Berry described it as an outfit that “does the dirty work for the CIA and FBI,” and Netflix Tudum also describes it recruiting everyday people and training them in tactical skills. That is a description of the film’s imagined agency, not a factual account of real government operations.

If you are choosing by premise, The Union offers a clear hook: an old romantic connection doubles as the route into a spy mission, with an ordinary construction worker suddenly out of his depth. That makes it a plausible pick for someone seeking accessible action-comedy rather than a spy story whose appeal depends on realism. If your decision hinges on whether Wahlberg and Berry have electric chemistry, whether the jokes land, or whether the chase scenes deliver, the official plot and cast information cannot answer those questions responsibly.
