But sympathy is not the same as absolution: his hurt does not erase the people he pushes away, and the more the episode watches him suffer, the less space it leaves for Belly to make her own future feel real.
What happens after the wedding in “Last Call”?
“Last Call,” the ninth episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty’s third and final season, aired September 3, 2025, with Jenny Han credited as its screenwriter. Its official synopsis says that, “In the aftermath of the wedding, Belly makes a choice that leads her on an adventure and forever alters her future.” The episode sends Belly toward France after her breakup with Jeremiah, setting up a decisive change in direction. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing supplies the synopsis and credits; Prime Video’s Season 3 listing identifies this as a season with 11 episodes.
Why is everyone pitying Jeremiah?
Because “Last Call” lingers on the aftermath as Jeremiah experiences it: the wedding is over, Belly is gone, and he is left to confront the collapse of the future he expected. His devastation is understandable. A breakup can hurt even when the person left behind has made a necessary choice, and the show does not need to make Jeremiah a villain for Belly’s decision to matter.
Heartbreak explains his behavior; it does not excuse it
The trouble is that the episode’s invitation to sympathize can crowd out accountability. TVLine’s Claire Franken describes Jeremiah’s angry exchange with Laurel, his rejection of Taylor’s attempts to care for him, and his refusal of Conrad’s olive branch. That recap’s account highlights a revealing tension: people are reaching toward Jeremiah, but the story’s focus on his pain risks treating their concern as secondary to his reaction. TVLine’s recap is one critic’s framing, not a substitute for the episode itself; what matters in the viewing is the pattern of hurt met with more hurt.

There is a difference between seeing why someone lashes out and asking the audience to excuse the lashing out. Jeremiah deserves emotional context, but Laurel, Taylor and Conrad should not become mere props in his heartbreak. “Last Call” is most frustrating when its attention encourages pity without giving equal weight to the cost of his choices.
Does Belly get to own her next step?
Belly’s move to France has the shape of agency: after the wedding and breakup, she chooses a new direction rather than simply waiting for one of the Fisher brothers to decide what happens next. The official synopsis calls her choice future-altering. That framing matters, because the trip should mark a life she is beginning to claim, not just a dramatic interval in the triangle.

Yet the episode gives more dramatic oxygen to Jeremiah’s reaction than to the promise of Belly’s new life. TechRadar’s Jasmine Valentine argues that the episode misses an opportunity to show Belly flourishing in a new city. That criticism lands because the departure is consequential, but its consequences for Belly remain more anticipated than explored. The show asks viewers to register her choice, then spends much of the hour attending to the person left behind. TechRadar’s review makes a similar case about the underdeveloped France storyline.
This imbalance does not make Belly’s decision meaningless. It does, however, make her feel less like the center of her own turning point. A story can acknowledge Jeremiah’s pain while still letting Belly’s new surroundings, uncertainty and independence become the episode’s emotional event.

Was Episode 9 filler?
Not exactly. Breakups need aftermath, and a season finale built on choices would feel hollow if the show skipped the emotional consequences. “Last Call” gives that aftermath weight and positions Belly’s trip as a transition. But with two episodes still to come in an 11-episode season, the hour also risks postponing the forward movement it promises. The season listing and episode count are available on Prime Video.
Its pacing problem is not that nothing happens; Belly makes a consequential choice. It is that the episode spends so much energy processing Jeremiah’s loss that the new story opened by that choice feels deferred. That can make the installment play like a holding pattern even as it advances the plot. Whether the pause feels earned depends on what the remaining episodes do with Belly’s decision.

What did critics think of “Last Call”?
Reception should be kept in proportion: Rotten Tomatoes lists one critic review for the episode, Kathleen Walsh of New York Magazine/Vulture, who rated it 3/5 on September 4, 2025. Walsh’s excerpt reads Belly’s impulsive move as a possible chance to grow. That is one critic’s rating, not a consensus or audience score. TechRadar and TVLine likewise offer individual critical responses, not measured audience opinion.
The episode is a useful hinge in the final season, but its emotional priorities feel lopsided. Jeremiah’s heartbreak deserves to be seen; it should not eclipse the more interesting question of what Belly chooses when the triangle is no longer the only story in front of her.

Where the series comes from
Amazon describes Season 3 as the series’ third and final season and identifies the show as an adaptation of Jenny Han’s book trilogy. Lola Tung plays Belly, Gavin Casalegno plays Jeremiah and Christopher Briney plays Conrad. The books are the source material for the series, not a guarantee that each episode follows a plot point-for-point. About Amazon’s series guide provides that context; Prime Video is the official viewing destination listed by the sources, though availability and options can vary by region.
