There is no official or universally agreed ranking of AEW’s best technical wrestlers. This list is an editorial judgment based on how wrestlers apply holds, chain and counter, adapt to opponents, blend styles, and tell stories through sustained work in AEW. It focuses on performers whose AEW matches are the basis for inclusion, rather than treating accomplishments from other promotions as proof of AEW ability.
Technical wrestling is not simply a high move count. William Regal describes the craft as understanding why a hold hurts and how to apply it effectively; Dean Malenko stresses counters, anticipation, and adapting a plan to an opponent. Natalya’s account of Bret Hart adds an essential measure: technical work has to serve the story. Those ideas guide the order below, but the evidence available does not establish a definitive comparison of every AEW match history.
What makes a great technical wrestler?
A convincing technician makes each grip, escape, and counter feel purposeful. Regal’s distinction between technique and “doing loads of moves” is useful: the point is not how many holds appear, but whether they have believable consequences and connect to a larger strategy. Malenko’s “human chess” description captures the mental side—anticipating what an opponent will do and changing the plan when needed. Natalya’s description of Bret Hart’s work underscores that the mechanics matter most when they advance the drama.
- Purposeful holds and selling: A hold targets something, and the opponent’s reactions make its effect legible.
- Chaining and counters: Wrestlers move between holds and answer one another rather than pausing for disconnected sequences.
- Opponent-specific strategy: A wrestler changes tactics to meet a particular challenge.
- Style integration: Grappling works alongside strikes, speed, power, or other approaches.
- Story and sustained quality: The technique builds a match with stakes, escalation, and payoff.
Championships and win-loss percentages do not measure these qualities. The ranking is therefore qualitative, not a statistical table or an official AEW verdict.

10 best technical wrestlers in AEW history
1. Bryan Danielson
Danielson is the clearest top-tier choice for a list grounded in technical craft. His work can shift from detailed grappling to strikes and urgency without making the holds feel ornamental. The case here rests on his AEW performances as well as his broader reputation, not on importing another promotion’s match results into AEW history. In a 2022 Sports Illustrated interview, Danielson praised Zack Sabre Jr.’s technique, saying, “I don’t ever recall seeing anyone wrestle with his technique.” That is Danielson’s informed opinion, not an objective measurement—but it also shows the respect he gives to a fellow technician.
2. Jon Moxley
Moxley is not a pure submission specialist, and that is part of his value in a technical ranking. He can make holds and transitions feel like tactical choices within a rougher, more physical style. His strongest case is the way grappling can serve a match’s character and conflict rather than interrupt them. AEW’s official Jon Moxley profile provides identity context; a current championship label should not be treated as a permanent career fact.

3. Hechicero
Hechicero belongs in the conversation for the layered, intricate grappling associated with his performances. His inclusion reflects the list’s emphasis on hold application, fluid transitions, and the ability to make opponents work through a puzzle. The available material does not provide a verified AEW match comparison or a defensible numerical score, so this placement is an editorial judgment rather than a claim of measurable superiority.
4. Serena Deeb
Deeb’s technical identity is built around disciplined control, deliberate targeting, and the sense that a small positional advantage can shape an entire exchange. That style fits the craft criteria better than a simple count of signature moves would. Her ranking reflects the quality of the technical approach in AEW, not a claim that all eras or divisions can be compared on a common statistical scale.

5. Zack Sabre Jr.
Sabre is a compelling technical comparator and a natural candidate if “AEW history” includes notable guests. His style has been characterized as technical, striking, and submission-oriented; a 2016 WWE profile describes his grappling and limb-focused submissions. Danielson’s 2022 praise further establishes how highly one elite wrestler regarded Sabre’s technique.
His position comes with a scope caveat: the material available for this ranking does not establish the extent or significance of Sabre’s AEW match history. He is included as a notable guest-wrestler candidate, not presented as a long-term AEW roster member or as someone whose AEW body of work has been comprehensively compared with contracted performers.

6. Kyle O’Reilly
O’Reilly’s technical case is strongest when grappling is treated as one part of a complete match vocabulary. He can make exchanges feel competitive and purposeful while drawing on strikes and other styles. That ability to integrate techniques, rather than remain confined to one mode, is central to the rubric used here.
7. Claudio Castagnoli
Castagnoli combines strength and athleticism with controlled transitions and submission work. His technical wrestling is compelling when a hold or escape changes the balance of power, giving his physical advantages a tactical dimension. He ranks below the top group because this is a subjective synthesis, not a sourced head-to-head scoring exercise.

8. Wheeler Yuta
Yuta’s place reflects a developing technical identity: grappling, counters, and the effort to withstand and answer more experienced opponents. The most interesting question in his matches is often how he adapts under pressure. This list values that strategic dimension while recognizing that a ranking across different careers and match volumes cannot be exact.
9. Daniel Garcia
Garcia brings a grappling-first sensibility that gives his matches a clear tactical center. His place on the list comes from the way holds and counters shape the contest, rather than from treating technical wrestling as a synonym for slow pacing or submission volume. A technician can be compelling precisely because the work feels urgent.
10. Eddie Kingston
Kingston is an unconventional but valuable inclusion. He is not defined by elaborate submission chains, yet technical craft also includes adapting a plan and using the right tools for a particular opponent. WWE’s practitioner feature cites Eddie Guerrero as an example of changing styles; that is a useful craft reference, not evidence that Guerrero belongs in an AEW ranking. Kingston’s spot likewise rests on the broader point that effective technical wrestling can coexist with a distinct, brawling identity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read this ranking
The top placement is the most strongly supported by the available source material: Danielson is discussed in connection with technical training, and Danielson himself singled out Sabre’s technique. The rest of the order is a subjective editorial synthesis, not an authoritative top ten or a claim that every AEW match has been exhaustively compared. Where a wrestler’s inclusion relies on guest appearances or the broader interpretation of technical craft, that distinction is stated rather than hidden.
