Francis Crozier survives the finale of The Terror and chooses to stay with the Netsilik rather than return to Britain. He is not frozen in the final image. The showrunners describe his decision as a hard, unresolved choice shaped by the expedition’s harm to the community—not a simple escape or a happy ending.
Spoilers for season 1, episode 10, “We Are Gone.” AMC’s ten-episode 2018 season adapts Dan Simmons’s novel and draws inspiration from the Franklin expedition. The creators’ explanations below clarify their intended meaning; they are not historical testimony about the real expedition. AMC’s interview with co-showrunners David Kajganich and Soo Hugh is the primary source for their account of the finale.

Is Crozier frozen, or does he survive?
Crozier is alive. In AMC’s May 22, 2018 interview, co-showrunner David Kajganich explicitly says, “He’s not frozen; he’s very much alive.” The final image shows Crozier seal hunting and sharing in communal life, not dying in the snow. Soo Hugh describes the image as one of endurance: after the expedition’s men have been lost, one man remains.
The sleeping child beside Crozier is not evidence that he has started a family with Silna. Kajganich says the boy is too old to be Crozier’s son. The moment instead suggests Crozier has been accepted enough to take part in the community’s daily life and care for its children.

Why does Crozier stay with the Netsilik?
His choice is partly an attempt at atonement. Kajganich says Crozier recognizes that the expedition’s crisis became a disaster for the community as well as for the men. By staying, he can try to earn trust gradually and help the people around him survive. The creators do not present that as a debt he can neatly repay or as proof that he has fully become part of the community.
There is also a personal cost to returning to Britain. Crozier would have to explain the expedition’s devastating failure, and Kajganich considers remaining a more honest fate than going home to account for it. He calls the life Crozier faces a rough one. The ending is therefore hopeful only in a limited sense: Crozier has a chance to keep living and contribute, but the series does not promise comfort, full belonging, or an easy redemption.

Does Crozier end up with Silna?
No. The television series does not resolve Crozier and Silna as a couple. The showrunners say they wanted Silna to have an independent character arc, rather than making her future a romantic reward for Crozier. They also rejected a reassuring transition into another culture that would feel unearned. Crozier remains, in Kajganich’s phrase, in a “no man’s land” between cultures.
What does Tuunbaq’s death mean?
In the series, Tuunbaq is physically real, not merely a vision or metaphor. Hugh also describes the creature as connected to balance in the island, its landscape, and Inuit life. The outsiders’ disruption and the sickness spreading among the men damage that balance, while the creature itself is also harmed. By the finale, it can no longer be controlled.

Kajganich calls him narcissistic, while allowing that illness and pressure contribute to his thinking. Hickey’s attempt to command Tuunbaq fails: the creature turns on him, consumes his soul, and dies after the confrontation. The finale does not frame Hickey’s plan as a successful transfer of spiritual authority.
How does the series ending differ from Dan Simmons’s novel?
The adaptation deliberately changes the resolution for Crozier and Silna. The showrunners describe Simmons’s novel as ending with the pair in a relationship and with children. The television series instead gives Silna an independent arc and leaves Crozier’s place between cultures unresolved. Kajganich and Hugh say they considered the novel’s ending too reassuring for the story the series had told.
That difference is useful context for viewers curious about the adaptation, but the two endings should not be treated as interchangeable: the show makes a distinct choice about Silna’s independence and Crozier’s future. AMC identifies Simmons’s novel as the source book in its 2017 series announcement.

The creators explain Crozier’s survival and his decision to stay, but they do not dictate exactly what viewers should feel about it. Hugh says the long final shot leaves room for questions about Crozier’s feelings and regrets. He has endured and found a place in the community’s life, yet the series avoids claiming that this erases the expedition’s damage or settles his identity.
