Spoilers for the Season 2 finale: The Stranger is Gandalf. The finale makes the answer explicit when he says, “Gandalf. That’s what they’re going to call me, isn’t it?” Before that moment, viewers could infer his identity from clues, but they could not treat it as confirmed.
Is the Stranger Gandalf?
Yes. In the Season 2 finale, “Shadow and Flame,” the Stranger recognizes the name he expects people to use: “Gandalf. That’s what they’re going to call me, isn’t it?” The Los Angeles Times reported the reveal after speaking with co-showrunners Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne. What clues pointed to Gandalf?
The clues helped viewers anticipate the answer, but none was as definitive as the finale naming him. McKay said the hints were placed in plain sight, including exchanges about a “gand” and a “grand elf.” The Los Angeles Times also noted the Stranger’s wizard’s robe and his “follow your nose” advice, which recalls one of Gandalf’s best-known lines.
- “Gand” and “grand elf”: Wordplay in the halflings’ conversations hinted at the name.
- The robe: A visual signal that the Stranger was a wizard.
- “Follow your nose”: A line associated with Gandalf, used as a callback rather than a standalone confirmation.

Why the identity was uncertain before Season 2
Before Season 2, possible identities included Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, and the two Blue Wizards. TIME considered Gandalf a strong possibility partly because of the “follow your nose” line, while the Stranger’s journey east also invited comparisons to the Blue Wizards. That was a pre-finale reading of the clues, not a confirmed answer. TIME, October 14, 2022
The showrunners told the Los Angeles Times that they considered Saruman and the Blue Wizards before settling on Gandalf. The reveal therefore resolves a question the series had deliberately left open for viewers.

How the showrunners connect Gandalf to Tolkien’s lore
The showrunners’ explanation is an adaptation rationale, not a claim that Tolkien wrote this television storyline. Payne said they found a reference in Tolkien’s deeper history indicating that Olórin—the name associated with Gandalf before his time in Middle-earth—had visited Middle-earth. Payne described their interpretation this way: “So Tolkien left it open that Gandalf may have come earlier than the Third Age.” Los Angeles Times, October 3, 2024
McKay described the series as exploring gaps in the mythology where events are not narrated in detail: “We wanted this to be the origin story of a wizard coming to terms with who he is and what he has to do.” Actor Daniel Weyman likewise described playing Gandalf at the beginning of a long journey. The Stranger is therefore presented as an early iteration of the character, rather than the fully formed wizard familiar from the Third Age.

Where the finale fits in Season 2
Prime Video’s Season 2 listing identifies episode 8 as “Shadow and Flame,” the season finale, and displays October 2, 2024 as its release date.
