“His Name Was Martin,” Season 8, Episode 10 of The Rookie, is my pick for the season’s best episode so far: a police procedural detour into zombie-like horror that still feels rooted in the show’s world. Its Westview danger gives the hour a sharply different texture, while humor and parallel character stories keep it from becoming a conventional horror film. The episode suggests a zombie scenario; the available descriptions do not establish literal supernatural zombies.

Which episode is “The Rookie’s” zombie-horror episode?

It is Season 8, Episode 10, titled “His Name Was Martin.” Disney+’s episode guide places it between “Fun and Games” (Episode 9) and “Aftermath” (Episode 11), and its synopsis says Nolan, Harper and Miles face a dangerous situation. That brief logline is restrained; the episode’s Westview material is the part described as zombie-like horror.

The “best” in this review is a judgment, not a documented consensus. The available sources do not establish an authoritative Season 8 ranking, critic score or audience rating. What makes this episode stand out to me is the scale of its tonal pivot—and how carefully the story tries to keep that pivot connected to The Rookie.

How does the show make the genre shift work?

In a July 20, 2026 interview with TV Insider, showrunner Alexi Hawley described the guiding principle: “And that’s basically to just ground everything in the reality of our show. And so as long as somebody’s playing the joke, then you can turn around and play something scary or emotional right afterwards and not feel like you’re in two different shows.”

That is the episode’s balancing act. The horror works best when it feels like an extreme situation confronting familiar characters, rather than a separate genre experiment dropped into the series. Humor gives the tension room to breathe; the shift back to danger or emotion can then land without requiring the show to abandon its procedural identity. That is an account of the creative intent, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the transitions seamless.

Westview supplies the horror

The central draw is the Westview crisis involving Nolan, Harper and Miles. The “zombie” shorthand captures the atmosphere and threat, but should not be taken as confirmation of actual supernatural creatures. Disney+’s official synopsis stays broad, while Hawley’s interview uses zombie-like language for the events.

Bailey and Wesley change the rhythm

Hawley said Bailey’s storyline offers a different, more visual and narrative balance to the Westview horror. The Wesley thread, meanwhile, builds suspense by making viewers fear for Lucy and then suggesting Wesley could be in danger. These parallel stories give the episode more than one kind of tension, but they also compete with the central horror plot for attention. Whether they relieve or dilute that pressure is the key trade-off in the hour’s structure.

Does the horror detour still feel like an episode of “The Rookie”?

Mostly, yes—because the shift is framed as a stress test of the series’ existing ingredients, not as a claim that the show has become a different kind of drama. The police-procedural foundation gives the crisis a recognizable point of entry; the comic and emotional beats provide the contrast Hawley describes. The result is an episode that can play with horror without asking viewers to forget which show they are watching.

The cost of that variety is focus. Westview is the premise that gives the episode its distinct identity, and the Bailey and Wesley stories necessarily pull the hour away from it. Hawley acknowledged the pacing challenge in the same interview: “We couldn’t just be in fear for 42 minutes.” That is his explanation of the construction, rather than a measurable claim about how long the episode sustains fear. The supporting plots make the hour less relentlessly frightening, while also making it more recognizably an ensemble episode of The Rookie.

Is there an extended cut?

TV Insider reported on July 20, 2026, that an extended version was released on Hulu that day. Hawley said the version restores material cut to meet network runtime, including character moments and additional depth for Harper and Miles. He also described the need to balance Westview’s sustained tension with the other storylines.

That report confirms availability as of its publication date, not current access in every country or under every Hulu subscription arrangement. Check Hulu’s current listing in your region before setting out to watch the extended cut.

Verdict: a standout because it takes a risk

“His Name Was Martin” is my choice for Season 8’s standout because it makes a strong horror pivot without treating the show’s humor, relationships and procedural identity as disposable. The Westview storyline supplies the hook; the parallel plots and tonal shifts are both the episode’s safeguard against monotony and its main structural compromise. For viewers who want The Rookie to try something dramatically different, this is the episode to seek out.
