10 Best Sharpshooters in Wrestling History, Ranked

Bret Hart is the defining Sharpshooter, but Sting’s Scorpion Deathlock and several memorable attempts make the move’s wrestling history broader than one name.

Bret Hart is the defining Sharpshooter in wrestling history, while Sting’s closely related Scorpion Deathlock is the move’s most important parallel. This ranking weighs four things: how strongly a wrestler is associated with the hold, the visible control and consistency of its execution, memorable uses supported by the available accounts, and influence on audience recognition. The evidence clearly supports the top two; several other names are documented as users or attempters, but not enough comparable career detail survives here to justify pretending the remaining order is definitive.

What the Sharpshooter is—and why Sting’s version belongs here

WWE describes the Sharpshooter as a hold that combines elements of the Boston Crab and Figure-Four Leglock, placing pressure on the lower back. It identifies the move as a finishing maneuver Bret Hart relied on. WWE’s submission-hold feature is a useful reference for that description.

Sting called his version the Scorpion Deathlock. In a 2020 interview reported by Fightful, Hart said, “The Scorpion Deathlock and the Sharpshooter are basically the same thing.” He praised Sting’s application and added, “If anything, he had it first, I think.” That is Hart’s recollection, expressed with uncertainty—not a settled account of who invented or first used the hold. Fightful’s October 30, 2020 report covers Hart’s comments.

The ranking

1. Bret Hart

Hart ranks first because the Sharpshooter is inseparable from his wrestling identity. WWE calls it his finishing maneuver and describes the hold as iconic and often imitated. Those are strong grounds for placing him at the top on signature association and influence, rather than relying on an unsupported tally of wins or applications. WWE’s submission-hold feature and its maneuver feature both underscore that association.

His impact is not just the name attached to a move. In WWE’s technical-wrestling feature, Natalya says, “But Bret put a story into his art and his art was submission wrestling.” That is a useful explanation of why Hart’s use is remembered as part of match storytelling, not merely as a recognizable pose. WWE’s interview feature on technical wrestlers includes Natalya’s comment.

2. Sting

Sting is the essential second name because he made the Scorpion Deathlock a recognizable counterpart to Hart’s Sharpshooter. Hart praised Sting’s execution, saying he applied it “as well as anybody,” and allowed that Sting may have used the hold first. The qualification matters: this ranking recognizes Sting as a major practitioner of the related version, without turning Hart’s tentative recollection into proof of origin. Fightful’s report of Hart’s remarks is the basis for this placement.

3. Owen Hart

Owen Hart appears in WWE’s feature on submission holds as another wrestler associated with the Sharpshooter family. That establishes him as a relevant candidate, but the available material does not document a career-long signature association comparable to Bret’s or provide enough match-by-match evidence to rank him above Sting. His placement reflects documented relevance, not a claim that this is a settled historical consensus. WWE’s submission-hold feature names Owen.

4. Natalya

Natalya belongs in the ranking both as a practitioner identified in WWE’s submission-hold coverage and as a wrestler who explicitly connects submission wrestling with Hart’s storytelling legacy. WWE’s technical-wrestling feature quotes her on Hart’s style, while the submission feature places her among the hold’s users. The available sourcing supports inclusion, but not a precise comparison of her execution or frequency against wrestlers ranked above her. WWE’s submission feature; WWE’s technical-wrestling feature.

5. The Rock

The Rock is named in WWE’s submission-hold feature among performers connected to the move. That makes him a documented entrant in the conversation, but the material does not establish the Sharpshooter as a defining finisher for him. Hart himself criticized The Rock’s execution in the Fightful report; that is Hart’s opinion, not a neutral technical finding. The ranking therefore recognizes the attempt and its place in discussion while keeping the evidence caveat visible. WWE’s submission-hold feature; Fightful’s report.

6. Shawn Michaels

Michaels’ place rests on a consequential use rather than a sustained signature association: Fightful recounts his application of the hold during the 1997 Survivor Series match associated with the Montreal Screwjob. The moment’s historical weight makes him important to a list about memorable uses, but it does not make the Sharpshooter his defining move. Fightful’s account of Hart’s comments and the match documents the connection.

7. Steve Austin

Steve Austin is included because Hart discussed his attempts in the Fightful report, criticizing how he applied the hold. This is evidence that Austin tried it, not evidence that it was a regular finisher or that Hart’s assessment is an objective technical verdict. The lower placement reflects that distinction. Fightful’s report.

8. Jeff Jarrett

Jeff Jarrett is among the performers Hart mentioned as having attempted the Sharpshooter. That supports including him among recognizable users, but the cited account does not establish repeated use, signature status, or a comparative record of execution. He ranks below the wrestlers with stronger documented associations or a clearly memorable instance. Fightful’s report.

9. Cesaro

Cesaro also appears in Hart’s discussion of performers who attempted the hold. The source establishes an attempt, not an enduring connection to the move. That is enough to make him part of a cautious ten-name list, but not enough to claim he was among its leading practitioners. Fightful’s report.

10. Other documented attempts

The evidence names several practitioners and attempters, but does not provide enough comparable information to make the final slot a confident individual ranking. This position represents the broader category of documented attempts rather than a claim that one unlisted performer is objectively tenth. The underlying candidate pool includes names cited by WWE and Hart, but mentions alone do not establish equal skill, frequency, or influence. WWE’s submission-hold feature; Fightful’s report.

What makes a great Sharpshooter?

Execution matters, but the available evidence does not support scoring performers by a supposed injury effect or a made-up technical metric. William Regal offers a more useful qualitative standard: “A great technical wrestler is somebody who dedicates his time and energy to learning every nuance of why a hold hurts and how to apply it correctly to get the most benefit out of it.” WWE’s technical-wrestling feature attributes the statement to Regal.

For this ranking, that means considering whether the setup and control look deliberate, alongside the move’s role in a wrestler’s identity and the moments audiences remember. It also explains the gap between Hart and the lower entries: WWE’s descriptions establish Hart as the central association, whereas several others are present in the record only as users or attempters.

Who does the Sharpshooter best?

Bret Hart is the strongest answer if “best” means the wrestler most closely associated with the Sharpshooter and its place in wrestling history. Sting is the leading related practitioner: Hart himself praised his Scorpion Deathlock, while the origin question remains uncertain.
