Spoilers for the season finale of HBO’s The Penguin. Oz kills Victor “Vic” Aguilar not because Vic betrayed him, but because Oz decides that love and loyalty make him vulnerable. After Sofia exploits his attachment to his mother, Francis, Oz treats closeness itself as a potential weakness. Vic’s love for him is real—and that is precisely the bond Oz chooses to destroy.
Why does Oz kill Victor?
Oz believes that anyone he loves can be used against him. Sofia has shown him how his attachment to Francis can become leverage, and he draws a brutal conclusion: to protect his rise to power, he must cut off the people who matter to him.
Victor has done nothing to deserve the murder. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc said the only thing Vic did “wrong” in Oz’s eyes was that “he loves him and that he cares about him,” while Oz cares for Vic too. LeFranc told TheWrap that Oz’s choice is to stifle his own heart. The killing is therefore not revenge for betrayal or a necessary move against an immediate threat; it is Oz rejecting a genuine bond because he believes intimacy puts his power at risk.
What does Victor’s death mean for Oz?
There are two connected readings. Inside the story, Oz is trying to remove a vulnerability after seeing Sofia exploit his attachment to Francis. As a character turn, he is choosing the monstrous side of himself over the capacity to love. LeFranc described the scene as something she wanted to feel “intimate and painful.” In her TVLine interview, she explained that the emotional closeness was central to the moment.

The choice is disturbing because Oz’s care for Vic is not an act. Actor Rhenzy Feliz described Vic’s final expression of kinship as, in effect, “I love you.” Feliz told TIME that this feeling is present even without the words being spoken. Oz kills someone who loves him and whom he loves, making the act a deliberate severing of his own emotional life—not a cold calculation that Vic has become an enemy.
Why does the ending feel like a sudden betrayal?
LeFranc said she always intended for Oz to kill Vic, but placed the death at the very end so viewers could believe the two had made it through together. The bench scene echoes their early companionship, briefly suggesting that their relationship might survive Oz’s ascent. The reversal turns that apparent resolution into a betrayal of the bond the scene has just recalled.

Where do Oz, Francis and Sofia end up?
Oz reaches power, at a cost
Oz gets the penthouse and public standing he has pursued. But his victory is compromised: Francis is incapacitated after a stroke, and Vic is dead. His relationship with his mother helps explain why he sees attachment as dangerous; it does not excuse his decision to kill Vic.
Sofia returns to Arkham
Oz engineers Sofia’s return to Arkham after she has nearly left Gotham and her criminal life behind. LeFranc described Arkham as a fate worse than death for Sofia, while pointing to Selina Kyle’s letter as a small note of hope. The letter offers a hopeful possibility, not proof of what Sofia’s future will be.

What the finale establishes—and what it does not
LeFranc described The Penguin as taking place between The Batman and its sequel, and the finale leaves Oz at a new level of power. That context does not establish what happens to him or the other characters afterward. Claims about future events beyond the finale remain speculation; Victor’s death is meaningful on its own as Oz’s conscious rejection of love in pursuit of power.
