Spoilers through the closing gunshot. The Season 2 premiere of The Old Man sends Dan Chase and Harold Harper into Afghanistan to find Emily, only to turn their hoped-for contact into a trap. FX lists the episode as “VIII”; “A Twisted Kind of Homecoming” is a framing subtitle, not the official episode title.
Where the premiere begins
Chase and Harper are being transported across the Afghan border in a truck when gunfire kills their driver. Stranded, they take cover and recover a satellite phone with a location on it. They follow it to meet an unknown contact, but arrive to find themselves held at gunpoint. Their contact, Omar, finally appears on horseback and identifies himself.
The premise is a rescue with little room for error: Faraz Hamzad has kidnapped Emily, and Chase and Harper have only days to reach her. Chase is a former CIA agent; Harper is a former FBI Assistant Director. The official FX series page identifies Alia Shawkat as Emily and Navid Negahban as Hamzad. FX’s series page describes the show as based on Thomas Perry’s bestselling novel.
Omar’s offer and the danger behind it
Harper offers Omar money and practical support—men, transport and supplies—in exchange for help finding Emily. Omar says Hamzad’s palace contains hidden tunnels that could take weeks to map. Chase counters that they have only days. Omar also claims Hamzad is working with the Taliban because of a large lithium deposit he plans to exploit. That is part of the episode’s fictional plot, not evidence about current Afghan mining or politics.

A flashback cuts into the urgency of the mission. A younger Chase and his wife agree that Chase will be Emily’s father and that Hamzad must never find her. It supplies the emotional history behind Chase’s determination while making the rescue more than a tactical problem: Emily’s safety is bound up with the promise that shaped her childhood.
The rescue turns into a flight
The group comes across signs of a Taliban patrol and a dead encampment. Harper calls Marion, the government operative coordinating the rescue, and learns that Marion expected them to meet Ali—not Omar. The mistake exposes Omar as a Taliban spy who wants to discover what Hamzad wants with Emily.

Omar attacks Chase. Chase is stabbed in the shoulder but overpowers him; Harper rides in to help him escape. Men on motorcycles pursue them, and the two take refuge in a cave Chase recognizes from his past. The apparent route to help has become another reason they cannot trust what they are told.
What the cave reveals about Chase and Harper
At the cave, Chase urges Harper to call his wife and suggests that Harper ask Marion to extract him. Harper rejects Chase’s assumption that he is weak and insists Emily is capable. Their disagreement gives the mission a second pressure point: Chase’s instinct is to protect, while Harper wants to treat Emily as someone able to act for herself.

Harper speaks with his wife, who reveals that Marion had contacted her. Marion is also Harper’s ex-wife, complicating the chain of communication around an already precarious rescue. The episode’s shifting loyalties are not limited to Omar; even the people on the same side have personal histories and separate judgments.
The ending: a gunshot, no answer
Chase falls asleep and dreams that Hamzad warns him. He wakes to a man standing over him who appears to be Hamzad, pointing a gun at him. A shot rings out, but the premiere does not establish who was shot—or whether the apparent confrontation is real. The gunshot is a cliffhanger, not confirmation of a death.

The scene deliberately pulls the episode’s grounded rescue story toward uncertainty. Chase has been navigating a real pursuit through hostile territory, but the final image is filtered through sleep, memory and fear. The premiere leaves viewers without enough information to decide where the dream ends and the immediate danger begins.

Chase and Harper spent much of Season 1 apart, so their uneasy alliance is a major part of the new season’s appeal. In a September 12, 2024 launch feature, co-creator, executive producer and writer Jonathan E. Steinberg said: “I think there’s a promise in the first season that it’s coming. In a way, it’s driving the show in the sense of what’s going to happen when these two guys are together. And it turns out it’s pretty great.” The premiere tests that pairing under immediate pressure: each needs the other, but neither sees the mission—or Emily—in quite the same way.
