What happens in The Golden Bachelorette premiere?
Episode 101 aired Wednesday, September 18, 2024, from 8:00 to 10:01 p.m. EDT. ABC’s episode listing described 24 men meeting Joan Vassos. The premiere balances her grief and hope about finding love with the playful spectacle of first-night introductions, then builds toward an early connection with Keith.
Joan reflects on John and the possibility of new love
Before meeting the men, Joan talks about John, her late husband. They met in 1983, when she was 20, and he died of pancreatic cancer. Joan remembers that he made her feel special and safe, while making clear that a new relationship would not erase him.
“No one’s gonna replace John,” she said. “He lives in a place in my heart and in my mind that is just his. But I have a big heart and there is room for somebody else.” She adds, “I don’t know if you could have two great loves in one lifetime, but I’m hoping.”

How do the men meet Joan?
The entrances establish different sides of the group: some offer a personal touch, others a joke or shared activity, and a few go for spectacle. ABC’s recap highlights these first-night moments:
- Personal and playful: Pascal makes an impression with his French accent, while Chock brings a jar of chicken noodle soup.
- Music and humor: Jack sings Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” Christopher makes a prune-juice gag, and RJ delivers a finance-themed line.
- Spectacle: David arrives on horseback.
Joan also joins some of the men for an impromptu pickleball game, giving the introductions room to turn into conversation.

Who got the first-impression rose?
Keith, a 62-year-old father from San Jose, receives Joan’s first-impression rose. They spend time together over cornhole and talk about the beach. Their connection leads to Joan’s first kiss of the season. Keith describes the moment as promising: “There’s something there that maybe we can build on.”
Why does Joan step away during the rose ceremony?
Before the ceremony, the men watch video messages from loved ones. ABC’s recap describes the scene as emotional; Joan is moved by the men’s support for one another and tells them, “I already admire these men and they’re brave.”

As the rose ceremony continues, Joan steps away because she feels overwhelmed. ABC’s recap says she said goodbye to five men, but also lists 17 as continuing from the original 24. Those figures do not agree, so the recap does not establish a reliable total for how many contestants left that night.
