The Fantastic Four: First Steps is at its best when it makes its retro-futurist world feel like a home—and its heroes feel like a family trying to protect it. Pedro Pascal leads a strong ensemble, while the film’s bold 1960s-inspired design gives this Marvel adventure a distinctive identity. Its cosmic scale and earnest tone do not always leave room for the same level of comedy, but the family focus keeps the story grounded.
Is The Fantastic Four: First Steps worth watching?
Yes, especially if you want a superhero film with a strong visual identity and a team whose relationships matter as much as its powers. The film’s most persuasive achievement is the way it joins its optimistic, mid-century vision of the future to the ordinary pressures of family life. It is less successful when the enormous scale of its threat competes with the character moments that make the team compelling.
Pascal’s Reed Richards anchors the ensemble, but the film works because the four heroes register as a unit rather than a lone star with supporting players. The central question is not simply whether they can meet a cosmic danger; it is how a family responds when that danger reaches their world.
A Fantastic Four story after the origin
This is not an origin-story retelling. Disney says the film begins four years after cosmic rays gave the four their abilities, so Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben already have a shared history when the story starts. That choice lets the film move directly into the dynamics of a working family living with extraordinary responsibilities.

Their challenge is to make the team’s bond feel lived-in while giving each personality space within the group.
Retro-futurism is the film’s defining strength
The setting is more than a period-style backdrop. Disney describes a vibrant, geometric retro-futurist world shaped by influences including Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Jack Kirby’s comics. D23’s production-design feature also points to pulp-art covers, industrial illustrations and Syd Mead’s work. The result is a version of the future that feels designed to be exciting, not merely plausible.

That mood is part of the film’s appeal. Pascal described the look as a deliberate devotion to the original comics: “It’s a nostalgia and a kind of fantasy fulfillment of the future, with flying cars and a disarming kind of charm.” Production designer Kasra Farahani summed up the intent this way: “It’s absolute optimism that the future will be beautiful, fast, and exciting.” Those ideas give the film an uncommon visual warmth among superhero stories built around catastrophe.
The design also helps the film stand apart from earlier screen versions of the team. Instead of treating the Fantastic Four as a familiar brand that needs a fresh origin, it gives this story a coherent visual language and lets the heroes inhabit it.

Family stakes against a cosmic threat
The official synopsis places the team against Galactus and his Herald, the Silver Surfer, as they defend Earth. That scale supplies spectacle and urgency, while the family bond provides the personal stakes. The tension between those elements is also the film’s main balancing act: the larger the threat becomes, the more important it is that the story leave room for the people facing it.
The film’s earnestness is a strength when it emphasizes responsibility, loyalty and the strain of protecting others. It can be a limitation when the cosmic conflict leaves less space for humor or for quieter character turns. The best stretches bring those modes together, making the team’s connection feel like part of the action rather than a pause between set pieces.

How the film compares—and where critics differ
The Associated Press called the film an “endearingly earnest superhero drama about family and heroism” and praised its modernist designs. Its reservation was that The Incredibles films have more comic verve. That is a useful distinction, not a verdict on which film everyone should prefer: First Steps leans into sincere family drama and visual world-building, while viewers looking for a faster comic rhythm may find its humor less consistent.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus also highlighted the cast’s chemistry and the appealing retro-1960s design. On October 4, 2026, the site displayed an 86% Tomatometer from 408 reviews and a 90% Popcornmeter from more than 10,000 verified ratings. Those figures are a dated snapshot of an evolving aggregator, not a substitute for deciding whether the film’s particular mix of earnestness, action and design suits you.

Verdict
The Fantastic Four: First Steps makes a convincing case for the team through design, ensemble chemistry and a family-centered story. Its retro-future world is its clearest distinction, and Pascal is well supported by Kirby, Quinn and Moss-Bachrach. The film’s earnestness and occasionally less lively comedy may not work equally well for every viewer, but the result is a visually memorable superhero adventure with a genuine sense of home at its center.
