The Great Flood begins as a tense story of a mother and son trying to escape a flooded Seoul apartment building, with Kim Da-mi giving the crisis a human center. Then the film turns toward a more speculative sci-fi mystery. That shift gives the disaster premise larger stakes, but the critical response suggests its later twists and explanations do not work equally well for everyone.

What is The Great Flood about?

Kim Byung-woo wrote and directed this 2025 South Korean sci-fi disaster film, starring Kim Da-mi as researcher and mother Gu An-na and Park Hae-soo as security officer Son Hee-jo. Kwon Eun-seong plays Shin Za-in. The story is set in near-future Seoul, where catastrophic flooding traps An-na and her young son inside their apartment building. As they try to climb above the rising water, Hee-jo arrives with a mission tied to humanity’s future. Netflix’s official title page classifies the film as Korean sci-fi, drama, and action/adventure, and includes the tags “Time Loop” and “Sci-Fi Drama.”

How does the story change?

First, a close-quarters survival story

The early setup is direct and physical: An-na must protect her child and find a way upward through an increasingly dangerous building. The confined setting gives the flood an immediate scale, while the mother-and-son relationship supplies an emotional reason to care about each obstacle. Netflix Tudum describes the characters’ effort as a push toward the top of a high-rise, with the flood threatening the city and the wider world.

Then, a larger sci-fi mystery

Hee-jo’s mission connects the escape to a broader question about humanity’s future, and the film expands beyond a conventional disaster thriller. That development is best approached as a shift in genre emphasis rather than a simple escalation of flood danger: the speculative plot becomes increasingly important, and the story asks viewers to follow a more elaborate set of ideas. The turn is part of the film’s design, but its effectiveness is a point of disagreement among critics.

What works, and where the film divides opinion

Tom’s Guide reviewer Riley praised the first 30 minutes, the mother-and-son stakes, and the film’s effort to connect its characters to the crisis. The review also found the later sci-fi material confusing, felt the flood receded as a focus, and judged the third act overambitious. Riley’s assessment of the visual effects was mixed as well, describing some CGI sequences as impressive and others as weak. These are one reviewer’s judgments, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond.

Other reactions point to a similar divide over the plot’s turn. In a December 22, 2025 review excerpt reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, Variety’s Dennis Harvey called the film “an ambitious shotgun marriage of too many ideas that end up seeming underdeveloped and rushed within a conventional feature runtime.” Craig Mathieson of The Age wrote on December 30, 2025: “Kim Byung-woo’s film doesn’t relent, but its unexpected plot twists are not fully satisfying.” Both responses identify the ambition and the risk: the film reaches for more than a straightforward flood escape, but its turns may leave some viewers wanting clearer or more fully developed ideas.

How critics and viewers rated it

Rotten Tomatoes’ page showed a 60% Tomatometer based on 25 critic reviews and a 36% Popcornmeter based on 500+ ratings when accessed on October 7, 2026. These are a dated snapshot of a changing aggregator, not fixed measures of quality. The gap is consistent with a film whose ambitious sci-fi direction has been more divisive than its initial survival setup.

Where to watch The Great Flood

Netflix announced the film’s streaming release for December 19, 2025, and lists it on its official title page, which also says offline downloads are available. Catalogs and language options can vary by region. The page lists Korean original audio, along with English, German, Latin American Spanish, and French audio options; English, Latin American Spanish, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese subtitles are listed. Some audio tracks include audio description.

Is The Great Flood worth watching?

It is a stronger fit for viewers who are open to a survival film that grows into speculative sci-fi than for anyone expecting the flood-rescue scenario to remain the whole story. Kim Da-mi’s central performance and the early parent-child peril give the film an accessible emotional entry point; the more ambitious plot turn is where critical opinion becomes less favorable. If that change in direction sounds intriguing rather than frustrating, the film offers a distinctive Korean disaster-sci-fi premise; if you mainly want sustained, clearly explained survival suspense, the later sections may be less satisfying.
