The rest of this list is an editorial ranking, weighing the range of DiCaprio’s roles, each film’s cultural or career impact, and how the director brought out a different side of his screen persona.
How this list ranks the directors
There is no objective measure of the “best” director DiCaprio has worked with. This ranking gives weight to four factors: repeat collaboration, the range of roles or genres, the significance of the film, and what the pairing added to DiCaprio’s screen persona. Scorsese leads because the number and span of their collaborations offer the strongest case; positions after that reflect editorial judgment, not a measurable score.

The 10 directors
1. Martin Scorsese
Scorsese directed DiCaprio in Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). The Golden Globes biography lists all six features, a sustained collaboration that let DiCaprio move among historical drama, crime, psychological thriller, and dark comedy. Scorsese also directed Killers of the Flower Moon, as recorded by the Academy’s 2024 awards materials.
2. James Cameron
Titanic (1997) paired DiCaprio with Cameron on a vast romantic disaster film, a different kind of showcase from the psychologically dense character work that would mark much of DiCaprio’s later career. It demonstrates how a director working at blockbuster scale could make a young actor central to a film’s emotional pull. The Golden Globes’ DiCaprio biography includes the film among his credits.
#1 Best Overall
- This ambitious undertaking, adapting William Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers and setting the story in a glossy music-video style in 1990s Florida.
3. Steven Spielberg
In Catch Me If You Can (2002), Spielberg gave DiCaprio room to play a charming impostor with quick comic timing. The role is a useful counterpoint to the brooding intensity often associated with the actor: its buoyancy and performance of confidence are part of the character’s deception. The film appears in the Golden Globes’ career overview.
4. Quentin Tarantino
Tarantino’s two DiCaprio collaborations show contrasting registers. In Django Unchained (2012), DiCaprio plays the cruel plantation owner Calvin Candie; in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), he is Rick Dalton, a fading actor navigating an industry in transition. The contrast—from a flamboyant villain to a self-doubting performer—makes the pairing notable for range. The Golden Globes filmography lists Django Unchained.
5. Baz Luhrmann
Luhrmann directed DiCaprio in Romeo + Juliet (1996) and The Great Gatsby (2013), bringing the actor into vivid, stylized adaptations of classic literature. The pairing connects a youthful Romeo to Gatsby, a figure whose self-invention and longing suit Luhrmann’s heightened visual approach. The Golden Globes biography records Romeo + Juliet.
6. Christopher Nolan
Inception (2010) put DiCaprio at the center of a science-fiction thriller built around layered realities and a tightly engineered plot. As Dom Cobb, he had to anchor an elaborate genre premise in grief and personal stakes. The film is a significant departure from the historical and real-world figures prominent in other parts of DiCaprio’s filmography; it is included in the Golden Globes career overview.

7. Alejandro G. Iñárritu
In The Revenant (2015), DiCaprio plays frontiersman Hugh Glass in a survival drama shaped by physical hardship and sparse dialogue. The performance earned him the Academy Award for lead actor, making the film a major awards milestone as well as a demanding change of pace from dialogue-driven roles. The Golden Globes filmography includes the film.
8. Clint Eastwood
Eastwood directed DiCaprio as FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in J. Edgar (2011). The biographical role called for an extended portrayal of a powerful public figure across different stages of life, adding a historical portrait to DiCaprio’s range of collaborations. The film is named in the Golden Globes career overview.
9. Ridley Scott
Body of Lies (2008) is DiCaprio’s political-thriller collaboration with Scott. DiCaprio plays CIA field officer Roger Ferris, a role that places him inside a tense story of intelligence work and shifting loyalties rather than a personal biopic or intimate relationship drama. The Golden Globes filmography lists the film.
10. Sam Mendes
Mendes directed DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road (2008), a relationship drama about a married couple confronting the gap between their ambitions and their lives. It is a deliberately intimate counterpoint to the large-scale thrillers and historical epics elsewhere on this list, and it reunited the two actors after Titanic. The film appears in the Golden Globes DiCaprio biography.
Rank #3
- Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Paul Thomas Anderson
What the collaborations reveal
DiCaprio’s director partnerships do not point to a single screen identity. Cameron and Spielberg used his charisma in accessible, large-scale storytelling; Nolan placed him inside a cerebral genre puzzle; Tarantino drew out both menace and comic self-doubt; and Scorsese repeatedly moved him between historical figures, damaged men, and morally compromised antiheroes. The variety helps explain why Scorsese’s six-film run stands apart without making the rest of the list interchangeable.
In a 2013 interview with CBS News correspondent Lee Cowan, DiCaprio described the creative process as collaborative: “But what’s been great is the collaboration and the fact that we’ve oftentimes gotten to discover what the film is while we’re creating it.” The extended transcript offers that perspective on how a director-actor partnership can develop during production.
Awards are context, not the ranking
Recognition helps mark the significance of particular collaborations, but it does not settle which director is “best.” The Academy’s 2024 awards materials record Scorsese’s directing work on Killers of the Flower Moon. Its 2026 awards materials list DiCaprio as a lead actor nominee for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle after Another, a reminder that his collaborations continue beyond the directors on this list.
