For a varied starting list, these 10 Summer 2024 anime stood out for the distinctiveness of their romantic premises, character chemistry or emotional tension, and the role romance plays in each story. This is an editorial selection, not an objective consensus: Anime Corner’s romance-category poll offers one reader-vote cross-check, while a separate Dengeki Online poll measured broader in-season popularity.
How this list was chosen
The recommendations balance premise, romantic tension, tonal variety, and whether romance is the central plot or one part of a larger story. Anime Corner’s 2024 romance poll supplies a transparent comparison, but its vote shares reflect that poll’s participants—not all anime viewers. Dengeki Online’s separate vote produced a different leader, in part because it covered broader seasonal popularity rather than romance alone.
The order below follows Anime Corner’s romance-category ranking. It is a useful way to organize the selection, not a claim that the ranking settles which series is best for every viewer.
The 10 best romance anime of Summer 2024
1. Pseudo Harem
Pseudo Harem pairs drama-club student Eiji with Rin, a classmate who uses her acting skills to play different romantic archetypes for him. The performance-based premise gives the series room for playful character chemistry, while the question of what lies beneath the roles gives the flirtation a personal edge. Anime Corner’s romance poll placed it first with 21.1% of category votes.

Best for: viewers who want a light, performance-driven school romance.
2. Too Many Losing Heroines!
This series centers on girls who have lost out in love—the “losing heroines” of other people’s romantic stories. That perspective makes romantic disappointment, rather than a conventional courtship alone, its defining hook. Anime Corner ranked it second in its romance poll, with 18.35% of votes. It also placed second in Anime Corner’s overall Summer 2024 ranking and first in Dengeki Online’s in-season popularity vote, showing how its reception extended beyond romance-category voters.
Best for: viewers interested in the aftermath of unrequited love and the people left at the edge of a love story.
3. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
Alya makes romantic confessions in Russian because she assumes her classmate Masachika cannot understand her. He can—and pretends he cannot. The gap between what Alya thinks she is revealing and what Masachika knows gives the school comedy its central tension. Anime Corner’s romance poll put it third, with 13.29% of votes; it also ranked fourth in the publication’s overall seasonal list.

Best for: viewers who enjoy teasing, dramatic irony, and a romance built around a secret understood by only one side.
4. Days with My Stepsister
Days with My Stepsister takes a quieter approach to a relationship shaped by a new family connection. Rather than relying on a high-concept romantic gag, it gives space to understated conversations and changing everyday dynamics. Anime Corner’s romance poll ranked it fourth with 13.11% of votes, while the series topped that outlet’s overall Summer 2024 ranking. Dengeki Online voters also praised its subdued conversations, though its in-season poll was not limited to romance titles.

Best for: viewers already invested in the series and looking to return to its gentle romantic drama.
6. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf
This fantasy series makes romance one strand in a larger story about travel, trade, and the bond between its central pair. Its appeal comes from watching a relationship develop alongside the practical and fantastical challenges of their journey. Anime Corner ranked it sixth in the romance poll, with 5.47% of votes.
Best for: viewers who want romance alongside fantasy and a broader journey, rather than a school-centered love story.
7. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies
The premise turns on Mira, an evil lieutenant who falls for magical girl Byakuya. Their opposing roles create the central romantic contradiction: the person Mira is expected to fight is also the person she loves. Anime Corner ranked the series seventh in its romance poll, with 5.31% of votes.

Anime Corner’s romance-category results identify which titles performed well with that poll’s voters. Its separate overall seasonal ranking had Days with My Stepsister first, Too Many Losing Heroines! second, Oshi no Ko season 2 third, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian fourth, and Pseudo Harem eighth. Those are overall-season placements, not romance-category placements.
Dengeki Online’s vote ran August 9–18, 2024 and asked readers about anime airing or streaming mainly from around July. It named Too Many Losing Heroines! first, Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian second, Oshi no Ko season 2 third, and 2.5 Dimensional Seduction fourth. Its other top-ten entries included The Elusive Samurai, Senpai Is an Otokonoko, Days with My Stepsister, and Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season, as well as My Deer Friend Nokotan and Ramen Akaneko. Because that was a broad popularity vote, its placements are not a romance ranking.
The differing results are a reminder to treat polls as snapshots of particular voters and categories. For choosing a show, the more useful distinction is often whether you want a playful rom-com, understated relationship drama, fantasy journey, ensemble setup, or a story where romance shares the stage with other themes.
Choosing a series by the kind of romance you want
- For playful school comedy: try Pseudo Harem or Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian.
- For romantic disappointment and its aftermath: start with Too Many Losing Heroines!.
- For restrained, conversation-led drama: choose Days with My Stepsister.
- For romance within a fantasy or magical conflict: consider Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf or The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies.
- For an ensemble or identity-focused relationship story: look at The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses Season 2 or Senpai Is an Otokonoko.
- For a returning romance: Kimi ni Todoke season 3 and The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses season 2 are continuations rather than entry-point premises.
Streaming rights vary by region and change over time; the poll results do not establish where these series are currently available.
