There is no single objective canon of anime cinema, but these 10 films make a strong, varied watchlist for movie fans: landmark science fiction, imaginative fantasy, psychological thrillers, intimate drama, and contemporary romance. The order is a viewing path, not a definitive ranking; it offers several ways into a medium shaped by distinct directors and storytelling traditions.

10 anime films to put on your watchlist

Use the quick guide to choose by mood, then read on for what makes each film worth your time. “Best” here means a defensible selection for breadth, not a claim that one ranking settles the question.

Film Director and year Genre and mood A good choice if you want…
Akira Katsuhiro Otomo, 1988 Cyberpunk science fiction; explosive and dystopian A landmark of animated futurism
Ghost in the Shell Mamoru Oshii, 1995 Cyberpunk science fiction; meditative and unsettling A philosophical story about identity
Princess Mononoke Hayao Miyazaki, 1997 Fantasy; epic and morally complex Conflict between people, industry, and nature
Spirited Away Hayao Miyazaki, 2001 Coming-of-age fantasy; wondrous and warm An accessible first step into Ghibli
Grave of the Fireflies Isao Takahata, 1988 Wartime drama; intimate and devastating A serious, emotionally demanding drama
Perfect Blue Satoshi Kon, 1997 Psychological thriller; disorienting and tense A sharp, unsettling study of identity and fame
Tokyo Godfathers Satoshi Kon, 2003 Comedy-drama; humane and unconventional A compassionate city story with comic turns
Millennium Actress Satoshi Kon, 2001 Drama; reflective and shape-shifting A film about memory, performance, and cinema
Your Name Makoto Shinkai, 2016 Romance and speculative fiction; emotional and expansive A contemporary story that blends the intimate and the cosmic
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya Isao Takahata, 2013 Historical fantasy; lyrical and bittersweet A visually distinctive folktale

1. Akira (1988): a cyberpunk landmark

Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira turns a dystopian future into a feverish story of power, youth, and social upheaval. The BFI calls it an iconic adaptation of Otomo’s manga. Its scale and restless energy make it a strong starting point for viewers interested in animation as ambitious science fiction rather than a genre confined to children’s stories. BFI’s anime film guide provides further context.

2. Ghost in the Shell (1995): identity in a cyberpunk world

Mamoru Oshii’s film pairs cyberpunk imagery with questions about consciousness and what makes a self. It is a more contemplative companion to Akira: choose it for atmosphere and ideas as much as for action. Rotten Tomatoes includes it among notable anime films of the 1980s and 1990s in its anime movie guide.

3. Princess Mononoke (1997): fantasy without easy sides

Hayao Miyazaki sets a sweeping fantasy around conflict between human communities and the natural world. Rather than reducing that conflict to a simple contest between good and evil, the film gives its opposing forces their own needs and costs. It is a rewarding pick for viewers who want adventure with moral tension. The title appears in the Studio Ghibli film catalogue.

4. Spirited Away (2001): an inviting first Ghibli film

A child navigating a strange spirit world gives Miyazaki’s coming-of-age fantasy a clear emotional anchor amid its imaginative transformations. Its sense of discovery makes it one of the most welcoming choices here for someone new to anime, without making it slight viewing for experienced film fans. BFI’s 2018 account records that it won the Berlinale Golden Bear and the Oscar for best animated feature—historical awards, not a current ranking. BFI’s 21st-century anime selection discusses the film, and it is listed in the Ghibli catalogue.

5. Grave of the Fireflies (1988): a devastating wartime drama

Isao Takahata’s film follows children in wartime, keeping its focus on the human cost of conflict. Its emotional intensity is substantial: this is not the light option for a casual evening. Studio Ghibli says the film was based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s 1967 short story and released in 1988 as a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro. Those two films make for a striking contrast in tone as well as subject. See the official film page for production and source-story context.

6. Perfect Blue (1997): a psychological thriller that unsettles

Satoshi Kon’s psychological thriller makes identity and public image sources of mounting tension. Its disorienting approach suits viewers who enjoy stories that complicate the boundary between what is lived and what is perceived. BFI and Rotten Tomatoes both include it in their coverage of anime cinema: see BFI’s selection and Rotten Tomatoes’ guide.

7. Tokyo Godfathers (2003): Kon’s humane comedy-drama

Kon shifts away from the more nonlinear mode associated with some of his earlier work for an unconventional, humane story set in Tokyo. Its blend of comedy and drama makes it the gentlest route into his films on this list, while retaining his interest in lives that intersect in surprising ways. BFI outlines the premise and change in approach in its 21st-century anime guide.

8. Millennium Actress (2001): a life refracted through movies

Memory, performance, and cinema continually meet in Kon’s Millennium Actress. The film’s transitions blur recollection and make-believe, making it a particularly satisfying choice for movie buffs drawn to stories about how films shape the way people remember and narrate their lives. Rotten Tomatoes describes this blurring in its anime film guide.

9. Your Name (2016): contemporary romance with a speculative turn

Makoto Shinkai combines romance with speculative storytelling, moving between intimate feeling and a broader sense of consequence. It is the list’s contemporary entry, and a natural pick for viewers who want a more recent film with emotional sweep. BFI covers it in its 21st-century anime selection. Disney’s announcement named Your Name in a slate for the U.K. and France; that regional announcement does not establish current availability elsewhere or guarantee that it remains on a service. Check local listings if you are looking to stream it. Disney’s announcement gives the original scope.

10. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013): a lyrical folktale

Takahata’s historical fantasy offers a different register from the list’s cyberpunk films and thrillers: lyrical, reflective, and bittersweet. It is an especially good choice for viewers curious about how animation can evoke the feeling of a tale being told, rather than imitate live-action realism. Rotten Tomatoes places it first in its guide, but that is one editorial ordering—not a universal measure of quality. See its anime movie guide.

How to choose your first film

Start with the kind of viewing experience you want, not with a supposed entry-level rule. The films vary in genre, tone, era, and directorial voice, so the best first choice depends on your appetite that day.

  • For high-energy science fiction: choose Akira; for a more contemplative cyberpunk film, try Ghost in the Shell.
  • For fantasy: pick Spirited Away for wonder and a coming-of-age story, or Princess Mononoke for a larger conflict between communities and nature.
  • For a thriller: choose Perfect Blue if you want psychological unease.
  • For drama: Tokyo Godfathers is the humane comedy-drama; Grave of the Fireflies is the devastating wartime choice.
  • For a film about films: try Millennium Actress.
  • For a contemporary romance: start with Your Name.
  • For lyrical historical fantasy: choose The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

Why this is a watchlist, not a definitive canon

Anime feature films span more than one genre, audience, or artistic voice. These ten selections put cyberpunk beside fantasy, psychological suspense beside intimate drama, and older landmarks beside a contemporary story. They also represent several directors rather than treating one filmmaker or studio as the whole medium. Curated lists naturally differ by period and editorial lens: BFI presents separate selections for earlier films and work of the 21st century, while Rotten Tomatoes’ guide ranges across decades and styles. This list is one useful route through that breadth, not the final word.

Finding the films to watch

Streaming catalogues vary by country and change over time, so a regional announcement is not proof of current worldwide availability. Disney’s cited slate was specifically for the U.K. and France and named only some films on this list. Search the services available in your region or consult a local catalogue before settling on a title. For physical editions, the Studio Ghibli catalogue includes a “Where to Buy” section; check that a Blu-ray or other release matches your region and offers the audio and subtitle options you want.
