The Apprentice is Ali Abbasi’s 2024 feature about Donald Trump’s early years in New York real estate and his relationship with lawyer Roy Cohn. After its Cannes premiere, Trump’s campaign called the film “pure fiction” and threatened legal action. The controversy also reached the film’s production, where financier Kinematics and the creative team gave conflicting accounts of a dispute centered partly on the film’s depiction of Ivana Trump.
What is The Apprentice about?
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, The Apprentice stars Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump. The Festival de Cannes lists the 2024 competition film at 120 minutes, with Canada, Denmark and Ireland as its production countries. Cannes’ official film page describes Trump’s rise through a “Faustian deal” with Cohn.
Abbasi has said the story is not only about Trump’s formation under Cohn, but also about the legal and political systems in which Cohn operated. In a TIFF interview with TheWrap, he called the screenplay “very much fact-based and fact-checked.” That is the director’s account of his approach, not independent verification of every scene, exchange or characterization in a dramatized feature.
Why did Trump’s campaign threaten legal action?
Following the film’s Cannes premiere in May 2024, campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung condemned it as “pure fiction” and said the campaign would file a lawsuit, according to the Associated Press. The AP reported in June that the film had not yet secured U.S. distribution. The cited reporting establishes a threat in 2024; it does not establish that a lawsuit was subsequently filed or what its outcome might have been.

Abbasi struck a more conciliatory note after the premiere. The Guardian reported him saying, “I don’t think it is a movie he would dislike.” That remark does not resolve the underlying disagreement: the campaign rejected the film’s portrayal, while Abbasi defended his research and described the project as an account of both Trump and the system around Cohn.
What is disputed about the Ivana Trump scene?
The film includes a dramatization of an alleged assault involving Ivana Trump, making the scene a major point of contention. The AP and The Washington Post report that Ivana said in a 1990 divorce deposition that Trump raped her. Trump denied the allegation. Ivana later clarified that she had not meant “rape” literally or in a criminal sense, while saying she felt violated.

Those accounts describe an allegation, a denial and a later clarification. They do not establish a court finding that the film’s dramatization is an adjudicated account of events. The distinction matters: a film’s presentation of a disputed episode is not itself proof of what happened.
Why did Kinematics and the filmmakers clash?
The production dispute concerned financing, distribution approval and the scene involving Ivana Trump. The Washington Post reported that Kinematics supplied approximately half of the film’s $16 million budget, according to people familiar with the production, and held approval over the U.S. distribution deal.

Accounts of the financier’s role differ. People close to the creative team described pressure to change the film; a person close to Kinematics disputed allegations of involvement by executive Mark R. Snyder and characterized the conflict as financial and related to the scene. The available reporting therefore does not support reducing the disagreement to a settled finding of censorship. It documents competing accounts of how the scene and distribution approval figured in the conflict.
When did the film reach U.S. theaters, and where is it listed?
After the initial period without U.S. distribution, The Apprentice opened in the United States through Briarcliff Entertainment on October 11, 2024, according to the Golden Globes’ interview with Abbasi.
